Another contributing factor to my poor ET and long turbo lag.

The fiberglass coating on the firewall has been deteriorating severely over the years. I took off my air filter about a week before I went to the track due to it being dirty/clogged. The day before I went to the track I duct taped the fiberglass up in an attempt to prevent any of it getting sucked into the turbo.

I noticed a more whiney noise from the turbo since I've gone to the track. I looked under the hood today finally and noticed the duct tape was missing. I immediately looked at the compressor and noticed a chunk missing off the end of one of the fins.... so the duct tape quite possibly got sucked in and minced by the compressor. I doubt all of it did... unless the turbo was really hungry.

I'm curious where the particles from the chipped fin went... and the duct tape. Car still feels great. Wonder if it happened on my final run at the track and it was quickly chopped and flown through the engine and out. Actually, the tape and whatever is probably all stuck at the intercooler. I need a new one anyway.

:awesome:

USE AN AIR FILTER

I might have to have my friend make me a nice tubular turbo manifold and put a new turbo on. This one is stuck to the current manifold anyway, 2 of the bolts are frozen in place and the head is rounding. I couldn't get them tightened or loosened when I had the head off back in March or whatever, so there's been a nice exhaust leak pre-turbo ever since.

Nah, just install the intercooler backwards, put a filter downstream from it and run it again, that'll clean it out! :p

^LOL!

So I have to get in touch with a turbo rebuilder and determine what it would cost to have a new compressor wheel installed.

I met with Revshift and am having them make me a custom tubular turbo manifold. Everything will be v-band connections (bolts and gaskets are the death of me on exhaust leaks). The turbine housing's flange is going to be cut off and a v-band welded on. The downpipe will also be v-band connection.

Not yet at least.. lol

Intercooler would catch almost everything. I have a tube and fin one.

As usual, going to take this and turn it into an upgrade moment. With the tubular turbo manifold and zero exhaust leaks (currently you can feel the exhaust blowing out where the turbo and manifold meet), it should perform much, much better. Once it's all installed, I'll retune and get to the track.

one of the reasons i like s/c better than turbo...no lag
and you get response at lower rpms

[ion] C2
08-15-2011, 07:22 PM
Go for a ride with me, you get response. Ask alero_bmxer, he was passenger at ASS.

With a big exhaust leak and a broken fin, there's a short delay. I'd rather have lots of power at 4000 RPM and beyond than low power all the way across the board..

ion have you done a/c delete or any other weight reduction

[ion] C2
08-16-2011, 03:51 PM
a/c condenser is gone, going to replace the compressor with a bypass pulley soon. otherwise no. what is there to remove? i mean obviously spare tire/jack/tools/everything in the car is taken out, but i don't know what i'd hit for weight reduction. every 100 lbs removed is roughly equivalent to 0.1 sec lower ETs.

i'd be better off losing weight myself

Save up and get a billet compressor wheel

[ion] C2
08-16-2011, 07:40 PM
no, i'm not spending $300 on a wheel.

Might be worth it though ion. The reason I have spent so much rebuilding the vortech is because I am keeping it forever! Whatever car I own, the charger will be modded to work on it. So, its a lifetime investment in my case... just food for though man

[ion] C2
08-16-2011, 08:18 PM
this turbo is not a lifetime investment to me. my main concern with this is to replace the wheel to be like it was before, and to have a nice new tubular manifold and a totally leak-free exhaust. fixing that big leak pre-turbo will make a huge difference.

the engine is the critical item to me. everything else is modular as far as i'm concerned.

Response from a turbo building acquaintance:

The standard wheel isn't sold seperately any longer (only the GT3071R and G2871R are sold), but I can upgrade the wheel itself to my billet design that I use. I gained over 50whp and improved response by 400rpms under the same boost pressure (Under 20psi)

here's a photo of what it looks like. (the example shows one powder coated)
This is not a Forced Performance compressor wheel

I'm able to do it as long as the cartridge and turbine wheel/shaft are in good order. It takes about 4 days, and you're looking at $500 to make, install and rebalance. (It would have to be rebalanced even if I had a new OEM GT3076R.

Let me know if this is a possibility for you.

What does a new GT3076R go for?
Seems like a decent price.....my new cylinder heads are nearly 4x that.
And they won't add 50HP.

[ion] C2

$1400 for a new turbo.
$500 for billet wheel.

$63 for standard wheel. (Just ordered this.)

Yeahhhhh I need my money to be used elsewhere. The turbo manifold is enough of a big change for now, and if I want to upgrade this turbo I can easily take it back off due to everything being v-banded. (At that point I would likely get a new GTX series turbo)

UPDATE

I found a brand new compressor wheel coming off a guy's turbo that's getting a billet one. Buying the factory one and returning the eBay one. Also powdercoating the compressor like the turbo above.

Also I'll be getting a TiAL stainless all v-band turbine housing.

Tried to cancel the eBay compressor wheel, and obviously English is not the seller's first language. I contacted him immediately the next day about cancelling and he gives me an e-mail like:
Dear ionc2,

thanks for double checking with us.

well noted, we will check with
shipping warehouse and get back to you as soon as possible.

anything we
could help, please kindly let us know.

happy bidding.

And then 2 days later I get an e-mail saying:
Dear ionc2,

thanks for double checking with us.

please kindly find the tracking
information.

Tracking number -> RR014667430TW
Tracking website ->

please
contact us for refound information once you recieve the item

Yeah I'm sure if I ship this thing internationally back to them and request a refund it will get lost/damaged and take a month to get sorted out.
