Wednesday evening I'll be going to the track, with slicks.
A member on the MI forum is letting me borrow his 26x8.5 MT ET slicks on 5x100 wheels (bolts to my spacers).
Last year with the headgasket issue I ran 13.4 @ 108 with a 2.3 60' and a full second of spinning in first gear once boost peaked. I launched from vacuum. The guy next to me ran 12.4 @ 108. My friend in his car ran 12.5 @ 109. Now that I will have traction, I'll be able to do a launch with some boost and maintain it down the track.
Can't wait. Running 110 leaded, smells great, runs so smooth (since the tune is set up for 100+ octane still lol)

catastrophic driver error, which will in turn... cause something in the engine to give (like it always done with ion)

Make history, man!
Don't forget, it's still possible to lose traction, even with slicks. ;) It'll take some finesse off the line.

This is true. My old Delta with 2 gummed shut barrels, running in the mid 20's, and putting down a whopping 90 HP, would STILL spin off the line sometimes with good tires.
Watch the cars in front of you. If they are spinning, chances are you will too. Don't kill yourself with a huge burnout. You only need to do so much, before it becomes pointless and showing off

Why didn't someone make a pole on what he would run? Is this first run only or an average of runs?
13.2 this is an absolute guess...couldn't miss out!!

Guy letting me borrow them gave me pointers on burnout technique, how to handle slicks down the track because they behave different, etc. I am uneasy about doing a burnout, but it appears necessary and I have an idea of what I should do.

My guess(es) based on 3 scenario's
1- you catch traction and the run goes awesome 12.59
2- you spin the wheels but it finally grips after spinning for a little 13.02
3- in order to get down the track you have to cross fire pits and fight a dragon while in the car...or something fails in the car 13.4

Slicks
13.95 @ 102.3
13.99 @ 102.1
Worn Street Tires
13.56 @ 105.2
Observations
I think I flashed the wrong tune (old one) back when I changed my fan settings before sending my HPTuners to sleepyalero so he can use it for a bit. Sucked not being able to log and investigate exactly what is going on with fueling and spark advance and such down the track. I haven't tuned it since last October, and apparently things changed. I was just able to see a glimpse of the fueling status looking at my gauges periodically down the track.
I suck at launching/turbo lag is bad. Seems to take forever then WHAM power comes on.
ran way richer than it should, and AFR not consistent (10.0 - 11.0).
bounces off rev limiter on the 1-2 shift causing lots of delay.
exhaust cutout is closed.
my tune is made for 100 octane. On 110 my AFR should be like 12.0 or so. tune is also way off.
SUMMARY: Need to retune for either 100 or 110. Preferably dyno tuned, by someone who is better than me. Slicks are not needed it seems. No traction issues.

Ya. Holding at 2200 RPM the car gets to 0 boost/vacuum, it doesn't build boost sitting there. If it does it moves forward, brakes can't hold it.
Next time I go out I'll be more ready than just thinking of going to the track with a fuel I've never used before and an outdated tune and exhaust cutout closed.

You're right, must be the wrong tune in there at this point. Otherwise, this defies all logic.
Did you say you ran leaded fuel? If so, I wonder if that could affect an O2 sensor. Hitting the rev limiter kills the runs right there.
But I disagree on the tires, with that beast tuned right, you'll need slicks.

Isn't your car auto too. Look I weigh 130 and i'm good at driving so let me run your car once and if i beat your time its no cost to me for any wear and tear i cause on your car when i hit 108 down the 1/4. But if your time is better than mine ill give you $50. P.s. ive never been to a track.

Alot to learn.. Where at the slips I want to see 60 ft and all that. GL next time
[ion] C2

2.3 60' ... like I said car moves out really slow off the line, once it hits 4400 it just pushes you in the seat, at that point it makes 18 psi. Guy next to me took off way faster, and I caught up and passed him to run a faster time than him. I'll post slips when I get home.
I need to practice launching, and I need to tune it. 10.0 AFR is not ideal.

First mistake was the huge slicks...I know they were borrowed so it not like you had much choice. They are to much for your hp, and plus the F/D ratio changed on you not helping in acceleration. Make me believe thats why you even had the rev bounce in first gear, even tho im not familiar tuning auto since im standard. I myself would go smaller diameter than stock and improve acceleration.

08-11-2011, 07:02 PM
It bounces on my normal tires. It's something I tuned out. My car makes a lot of power in the high end and the revs move real fast, so the limiter and shift pressure/timing need to be adjusted so it happens before it hits limit.
I'm aware of the gearing change with the 0.7" increase in overall diameter.
With a proper tune on the right fuel, I might need the slicks. Being an auto I can only launch at a certain RPM..

Hey, wait a minute, I didn't catch the part where the diameter of the slicks got changed.
I would offer to let you use my other slicks, 7.5 x 23.5 M&H.
BUT, it is a very light weight tire, and I would fear for your safety when braking at the end of the track. I did get my fastest 2 runs on them.

Ya so hopefully in a week or two I'll be able to get back to the track with the proper AFR and a good launch. Turbo sounds crazy at 18-20 psi. I mean for short burst runs (before the 10 AFR sticks around and bogs things) it feels great.
