So what do yuo guys generally use for oil? Is there a specific kind thats best?

I am used to my old trucks and jeep where it was just valvoline max life 100k+. What goes best with a 2000 LD9 with 120,000?

I use Mobile 1 synthetic and its great. But, if you don't use a synthetic now, I wouldn't switch over to it from conventional.

I opt for mobil, but refuse to pay full price. I also just recently switched to 10w30, since my engine is near 100k and was getting a bit loud.

I always use Mobil 1. No Mobil 1 filter for the Ecotec though (at least there wasn't before).

AutoZone has the deal with the 5 litre jug of Mobil 1 and the Mobil 1 filter for $32.99 right now.

Walmart mobil one for the 5 litre jug is 25. Since the general consensus seems to be mobil one i think I will go with that. Thanks for all the feedback guys.

Valvoline Maxlife 5w30 is what I use my in alero

I know it makes a difference, when I first got my alero it was losing oil somewheres ( not much but enough to make a difference ) I bought maxlife because I have used it before after one oil change with it it stopped whereever the oil was losing it from and no longer loses oil between oil changes

I use Mobile 1 synthetic and its great. But, if you don't use a synthetic now, I wouldn't switch over to it from conventional.

I switched to Mobile 1 at 60,000 miles and I'll be turning 130,000 before the end of the week, however I wouldn't suggest going to syn oil after 60,000 miles

I tend to use Redline & Eneos... after that is Royal Purple then Mobil1.

Oil filter I tend to see what's the best one in stock in my area & then I go that route.

I never knew people had so many preferences for so many variations of oil...I just go by the owners manual and use a decent name brand of 5w-30.

So I curious: what is the influence behind all these different choices and the affects of such?

Somewhat longer answer:

Oil is basically either refined from crude or 'created' from raw chemicals (sythetics). In general synthetics are considered superior, especially in newer tighter engines. A major benefit of synthetic oils is that they last longer which CAN allow for longer times between oil changes, up to 25,000 miles.

Using the proper weight of oil is important. In almost all cases what the manual recommends is correct.

A good oil filter is VERY important. Changing them often will keep the engine and oil cleaner which helps the oil last longer. Many people using Mobil 1 for example will change the oil filter every three months or 3,000 miles but only change the oil once a year (topping off will be required).

Honestly a HUGE influence is brand loyalty. I never used anything but Pennzoil until I tried Mobil 1 and look forward to trying some truly premium oil in the future. High Mileage oils seem to contain more additives, which can help older engines to run better and/or last longer.

ha thats why I asked. Some engines do better with some oils than others. for example my old jeep ran best of of valvoline and my truck did best on penzoil. seems most car owners I know run high end premium oils or mobil one
