so theres some iiiitttyy bittyyy spots of rust behind the rear wheels and a little bit on the doors and i was wondering if i could safely take these off with ultrafine (0000) steel wool. my mom said when she bought the car she did it with no problems on the rear spoiler, but will it damage the clearcoat?
by the way they arent like corroded rust spots, just little specks on top of the paint

That would probably work, but your mom couldn't have taken rust off the spoiler, it's not metal.

maybe it was just the trunk lid she cleaned off. i dont think she knows the difference lol

wet sand them off with some 1500-2,000 grit wetordry sandpaper, then finish it off with some buffing compound but dont go too crazy or you will burn through the clear. never ever use steel wool on paint.

also there might be more rust under the sideskirts that you can not see. i had to cut out a lot of the rust and replace it with fiberglass and welded sheet metal.

sounds to me like the rust he has is because of little rock chips that exposed metal, not due to rusting through.

How did u get the sideskirts off?
I nearly ripped my clips apart - not nice.

Im pretty sure the back 3 clips need to be compressed and pulled out, then you push the side skirt to the front of the car and it should come off.

well it almost sounds like your car has chemical fall out/rail dust, brake dust/ jet fuel. diesl fuel deposits
i would try a clay bar first before yoou do steel wool lol wow lol clay bars are sold in fine to heavy i would get the medium cuting
then if that doesnt remove the problems then i would do 2000 grit, and lightly sanding with water, and then buffing the area out
if you have experience in wet sanding and buffing good if ya dont you will fail and burn through the clear then your fucked
hope that helps

i have no equipment/experience with wet sanding...
and yeah its not rusted through, just maybe some brake dust that got on the paint and rusted. it comes off easily with my fingernail, but then again theres hundreds of tiny ones so im not going to sit there and scratch away at my paint.
and yes, alas, the side skirts are startin to rust out. but i dont have the money or equipment to get them redone so ill have to live with it.

Or: google a product called rust release. May be a lot simpler than the scrubbing etc etc

sorry, im dont have all the panels of the car memorized yet so im probably refering to the wrong thing. what i meant was the part thats below the doors is rusting. (this has nothing to do with the rust spots that are appearing behind the rear wheels) and i never said there wasnt rust. my car is covered in rust!!
ill post some pics tomorrow when its bright out
