headgsket or intake gasket

I have a friend that has a 1999 grand am with 100,000 miles. They say that the car eats a lot of coolant and that the engine shakes real bad for about 10 minutes and then calms down. also it over heats in the summer and shuts down. The other problem they are having it that the fuel it cut when the tank is half full so they have to always keep the tank above halfway.

ya there is white smoke i bet it is leaking internally because you can not see any coolant leaking.

I'd say head gaskets, thermostat and possibly fuel pump. sounds like they have driven it a lot overheating and such like that so i'd say it probably also warped the heads.

well i know what i am doing tomorrow during engines class. I am going to send the heads to a machine shop.
