A few weeks ago my hand brake locking mechanism (or whatever the hell it's called) broke and i just now finally installed a new one. Well turns out the cable has too much slack and i somehow need to adjust it. Being new to the world of hand brakes, how would I go about tightening the cable?

If you have rear discs, you'll have to pull the rotors off. Behind each of them is a toothed adjuster wheel on the part that pushes out on the brake shoes.

If you have drums, someone else will have to help ya.

Ok I have everything off but the adjuster won't budge either way. Do I need some special tool?

Yeah I used wd-40.maybe some needle nose pliers would help. I tried taking the pads off and adjusting it. It works but it's almost impossible to put them back on after.

For future reference, could someone past the method for those of us that have drums?

When I took the car to the mechanic shop, they used the tip a flat head screwdriver to turn something on the top part of the drum, up and down (depending on if they were tightening or loosening). They would then place the drum back and see how freely it spins. After that depending on how freely it spins, they would remove the drum again and adjust accordingly.

BTW I have rear drums

This is a bad pic that I got from my memory

The red area shows around where the thing they move up and down for adjustments was. The screwdriver was used as a lever with the little cylinder shaped thing on top being used as a fulcrum.

Sorry for not using proper terminology, I just dont know the names of the parts.

This should work a little better.

The thing they adjusted was a star wheel.

Cliff8928: This should work a little better.

That looks much better actually lol

But yeah, I believe the star wheel as mentioned by lucalare is above the cylindrical object above three on Cliff8928's pic
