I had a similiar problem connecting a HP line to the power steering pump on my 1985 Escort GT. I ended up using a basin wrench to get the fitting on.

Except I actually used a basin wrench end piece that fits onto a regular ratchet set extension, but you get the idea.

Your really not supposed to run it until you have purged the air out, as in fill it back up, bump the engine, then refill. Repeat this process until the power steering fluid stops disappearing. At some point in the refill process you are supposed to turn the wheels all the way to one side and back a few times as well.

If it never got low than I can't see how you could have runied the pump. I've done worse on my Escort and that was over 30,000 miles ago and the pump is still working fine.
