I just got a 2001 ga gt for $500 cause the tranny is cracked. How hard is it to change in your opinion? Also, the tranny works if you can keep fluid in it, so would welding the crack be an option?

JB weld that shit transmissions are subject to minimal pressure you should be fine with a good JB weld. Good luck!

I thought maybe that too, but i also know JB weld tends to come undone over heat.

Jb weld may work. But that's only a chemical bond. I would feel better with a physical bond (ie weld).

could work, you are gonna want an experienced welder, and they are may or may not weld it. Not sure if there is anything in tranny fluid that will react with argon gas.

you can weld it, nothing in a trans will react with argon gas, however if its aluminum you will have to use a spool gun or TIG weld it

Ok, thanks everyone. I'll see. I was hoping to just weld it in the car if possible, cause if i take it out i'll just put a new one in. Deciding if its gonna be donor parts for the alero or fixed. It's almost too nice to wreck!

You could probably went it inside the car, although I wouldnt like to...If it was MIG or spool gun..I personally wouldnt even attempt it in car with a TIG

what about throwing a piece of steel over it then welding that on like a patch, that way you don't have to worry about fluid and such

You can't weld steel to aluminum, it just doesn't work. You could do that with a sheet of aluminum though, depending on where the crack is, but you better be certain you get it fully sealed. Best option would be to TIG the crack closed then machine it back down if needed.

depending on the crack its usually welded and ground down on the inside of the case, ground down and then the outside welded up, but usually isn't necessary..I would personally just weld the crack without a plate over it, leaves less room for error when fitting a plate that may not fit flush and stop all leaks

Or JB weld it and sell for $1500 and make some money.

I would cshop around until I found a welder who could do it in car. Even if it doesn't work completely, you can JB weld and spots left over if it leaks after that. Then report back what you have done.

cool. Then the other option, is it a hard job to just swap in a used tranny? I haven't done one on these cars. The SHO is a pain i know, and everything else i've done is rear wheel drive.
