What to use to get upstream O2 out?

OK so my O2 sensor is throwing a P0135 code so I go to replace it today.

I grab my 7/8" wrench and go downstairs to do it.

The wrench goes on the O2 sensor, just barely, but it leaves no room to move it. One side it's on the header, the other side it's jammed on the EGR tube.

I was thinking about borrowing one of these from a mech at work. I was just wondering what everybody else uses? I don't have a shorter wrench.

There are specific sockets for O2 sensors. Just go into an auto store and ask for an O2 sensor socket and they are only about 10 bucks and have a little cutout so you don't bust any wires on it and it makes it easier. Trust me on this. I tried everything before I bought one and cursed at how easy it was with one.

You would have to be pretty strong to break one loose without leverage. That and the socket screwdriver does not have anywhere for the wires to go, so you couldn't use it anyway.

The deepwell O2 socket sucks becuse you have to fold over the wires, when you put in the new sensor, and risk breaking the connections or the weather pack where the wires enter the sensor.

The one on harbor freight works fine (I've got 1), if you get the one from sears or usually autozone or advance auto parts, though its got a 6 point on one side and 12 point on the other, makes for getting in tight spaces easier.

The one I bought from Canadian Tire (slotted socket) was 8" deep so I didn't have to bend any wires. I highly suggest looking at them.

BigShot - You can't use the socket screwdriver because the O2 sensor has wires coming out the top which get in the way of the full socket. The special O2 socket has one wall missing where the wires can pop out so they are not in the way.

autozone/advance has a universal "oxygen sensor socket" its basically a deep well socket with 1/4 of the sidewall missing on the socket, for the socket to slide sideways onto the sensor, and for your wires to stick out the side, and not be damaged. i replaced my upstream and downstream by hand no problem with this socket

its easy to get leverage with the socket and wrench driver, i have one of the sockets somewhere, but i cant find it.

Yeah I picked one of those up and it works, fits on the O2 and everything however now I have another problem

how do you get it out if it's seized?!?!?

I never did an O2 before. I tried it this afternoon, could not budge it. A guy at work suggested using a pipe on my ratchet.

Normally I would just give it a shot of WD-40, but on a header that normally gets to 1200*, ummm yeah,no

i had same problem with upstream since it sees all the heat. there was this spray i used, specifically for high heat seize problems....forget what its called but, you spray and let it sit for a couple of minutes and, give it a wrench and breaks like butter

Never heard of a high heat anti-seize, but then again, I've never had a reason to use it until now :ninja:

yeah its a bottle, that has one liner advertisements on it, and if i recall it said things on it like "will unlock anything" and "great for rusted bolts" blah blah blah.

it worked like a charm.
