Windshield defroster noise?

Hey all, Last month I had my brakes done and so at the same time I had the mechanic look at my AC because it wasn't cooling. He topped off the gas but I've come to the conclusion the compressor is done.

Now that the colder weather is here I'm using my windshield defogger and suddenly there is this strange droning noise coming from under the hood. The defogger works but I'm thinking for how long. As soon as I change the setting to foot warmer or whatever, the sound stops immediately. I only mention the AC because perhaps the two are related?

Anyone have any ideas?

They ARE related, actually. The compressor runs when you set it to defog, because it dries the air out before it blows it onto the windshield.

So yes, if you've got a funny noise under the hood when the defogger is on, that would most likely be the compressor making angry sounds.
