Dunno about underlying factor don't know what could cause it but dropzone springs give a good drop. There cheap and I put like 50some thousand on them.

New struts would be recommended...

Nope. I used them on stock struts and so have others. There like 110 on ebay

if you buy them from madracingconcepts (same seller as the ebay guy) you can get them with shipping for same price as he has listed on ebay not including shipping, Probably cheaper as shipping to canada was an extra 15 and came out to same as his ebay listing

i kinda suck with this but are the struts something completely different or is it a better version of a spring xD

the strut is the component within the spring.
In the typical Mcphearson strut system your have the top mount with usually 3 lugs on it these bolt into the car, DO NOT touch the nut in the center because it hold the tension of the spring, fuck with that and you'll lose limbs
under the mount there is the strut itself, which is in the center of your spring, then at the bottom of the assembly there is a space with bolt holes which will attach to the bracket, its not a big deal, I just changed the assemblies on an STI in like 2.5 hrs, and that includes the time for an alignment :D
edit: one sec I'll get a pic labeled for you

Springs break on these cars?

absolutely! springs are just steel, if put under stress and exposed to hard conditions such as weathering or salt of course they can break

They break like mad on the back of certain years Escorts because they put a stupid plastic sleeve that retains moisture, which rusts them out. The aftermarket ones don't have this. As in it's not a matter of if, but when. Aside from that, I've never really heard of anything else breaking a spring (except on other cars that had the same stupid plastic sleeve). I would think that it's pretty rare to have a spring break on an Alero.

like i said it depends on the abuse its put through, I know up here there are a lot of Alero's around with one end sagging and thats because either the spring or the mount is rusted out. Salt destroys steel

yep. every winter my car gets more and more fked from the amount of salt thrown on the roads. the spring is corroded to hell. so then i could probably get away with not replacing the strut at well for that wheel?

well look at it this way... If you replace something on one side...you need to do it to both...you don't want to have one tire hold firm on a corner while the other is rolling like a mofo cause the assembly is warn...
but no technically you don't need to replace your struts if all you need is springs, however if you can afford to you definitely should...If your going to lower it i would go with KYB AGX's because they are designed to handle drop...IIRC GR-2's are built to OE standards

I understand you on that...you shouldn't have a problem if you go a mild drop say like 1.5'' If you go further your spring won't be large enough to keep the the strut from hitting its interior bump stops, making for a very bumpy ride and eventually leading to replacement of the struts

i hear that. 1.5 is about the max i was planning. i scrape the bottom on everything as is haha

this might be something ill do in early spring if it lasts that long just because winter is right around the corner and im low to the earth as is. so even lower in the snow.. ack

yeah that should be replaced as soon as possible, I really wouldn't wait til spring that could cause some serious issues

I would be tempted to just use a quick strut on both sides.
