It can be done, but it's a lot of work. The tranny you mentioned is very strong, and is the one that GM used in their supercharged GA development mule.
You'll need to fabricate custom mounts and axles, plus get the pedals, clutch master cylinder and a few more other crucial parts....and then you need to get someone to take care of the computer. It won't be a quick, easy, or cheap project.

the down side to a getreg 284 is that if you break one or need parts ONLY getreg can service it. its not cheap by any means. it uses a pull type clutch that only fits thats trans so upgrads are not cheap.
reason I picked a 282 from a cavlier is even though its not as strong they are a dime a dozen, have parts available everywhere, clutches are cheap, limited slip diff is available as well as other upgrades.
I plan on beating the crap out of my manual and when something breaks I dont want to go on a man hunt for new parts.
another thing to think about is the G6 will come with a 6 speed in front of the 3900 acording to gm.
its based on the same block as ours so it will bolt up.
it may even mount directly in the car.
only time will tell

Getrag (Gears) is the manufacturer and 282, 284 are model numbers. They are 5-speed manual transmissions used on various late-80's to mid-90's GM cars.

Springs, any insight as to what 6 speed tranny they're using in the upcoming G6? I was figuring on it being the same one used in the Saab 9-3 Aero, but I can't be certain. I've heard the 6 speed in the saab is a Getrag F40 transaxle, and is quite strong and has an LSD. Looking up "Getrag F40" on google, however, turns up nothing but transaxles for the famous Ferrari F40
Have you any insight into this? Can you find any info on a Getrag F40 6-speed transaxle?
