View Full Version : front brakes possably dragging
i think my fronts are dragging, ive suspected them for a lil while so i did a little expirement, i drove the car for 30 mins in the country only using the e-brake.
when i stoped i checked the fronts and thy were hot to the touch, my question is what is causing both calipers to hang up.

if you've had a new master cylinder put in recently the push rod on it could be adjusted improperly. Another possibility is that the metering valve could be going bad, in which case you would need either a new combination valve, or a new master cylinder, not sure if it's one unit on the alero.
its the original master cylinder

There's 2 "slides" in the form of bolts that the calipers float on, and when they lose their lube and get rusty they hang up.
Pull off the front calipers.. are the inside or outside pads worn differently? If so, the slides are frozen up. You can attempt to use a driver punch (not tapered!) and drive the slides out of the caliper, then replace them with a new set of bolts/slides.
If that doesn't work, just buy a new caliper along with new bolts/slides. Makes sure you lube them with looooads of brake grease and if there's a rubber boot (usually there is), make sure it's not torn and is installed properly.

^^ What he said.
Odd that it's both sides. At first I was going to say the piston was seized

clutch1's idea is good, i didn't think of that one, if that's not it i would think about the metering valve.
