According to my Alero's records, original fuel pump went out at 67,440 miles, but was replaced under warranty, so I don't have a full cost for the repair...

The $488.73 is not quite double retail for an OEM type from NAPA,
$280.00 on labor seems about right.

One thing to keep in mind here is that some of the new OEM replacements are not as good as the original Delphis, etc. that came with the car. There are new ones that have the upgraded per GM wiring harness, (even Airtex), but some of them have a more restrictive flex tube.
That one would be of a lesser quality than the Bosch or Carter.
But even the New Delphis (and I believe the new AC Delco) are not as good as the originals that came with the car.
I got one from Autozone and paid the high price, but it failed within a week due to other factors than the pump. I got a refund from Autozone, no questions asked, just took it down the street back to them.
The canister asembly/pump is something I like to see before I buy, or at least know exactly what the brand is. I would ask the seller what brand, if it is Airtex or Delphi, AC Delco, that would be a good price. Still, I like the idea of easy warranty exchange.
AC DELCO # MU1253 / MU1374
GM # 88966970 / 88967294
AIRTEX # E3507M
DELPHI # FG0375
CARTER # P74831M
BOSCH # 67475

i know i could have got it done else where cheaper but i havnt found a mechanic in my town that i trust. Also the pump came with everything need and has a full lifetime warrenty as long as i own the car. At least i got something from it.

I wish mine had that warranty. I'll bet they even included a filter..... :)

They better have replaced it, that's standard practice. I would ask them if they did. At the price you paid, you should never have to mess with it again.

around 4 hours labor......Im not no professional or anything but could easily do that in less than half the time. $488.73 is twice the price of a fuel pump from advance auto parts or autozone around here.

Around here they would have charged more for the towing.

I also should have said that I do see fuel pump rebuild kits on eBay.
