any grand am, CAI or WAI will work, only Cavi WAI's will work

yup i agree, I made one out of a rain gutter for my old Achieva, lmfao I was the hit of the town.

Wow, rain gutter, ive seen some wild shit used for CAI/WAI but never rain gutter, id like to see that. Sounds cool.

^^ yea it was, it was more of the dryer vent type of ductwork, but worked just as well, they just called it "the rain gutter intake"

You can get the chrome pipes on ebay
You'll need 3 rubber couplers, chrome tube, and a cone filter
That's for a WAI

whats better wai or cai

CAI.
Some people will say you'll have problems with the CAI sucking up snow and water, but unless you drive through 6 inches of snow or water on a regular basis, don't worry about it.
For me, I drive through 6 inches of snow 6 months out of a year. so I went with a WAI.

but will the wai still give better throttle control and better gas mileage

say i get a hood scoop and drill a hole in the hood for the air intake will that work as a cold air intake

I had an intake before they even made them for the alero, If you want WAI just take a cone filter and attach it directly to the throttle body, take out the factory filter, box, restrictive box and plastic hose(I think) and just attach it. only pay for cost of the filter, no need to spend money on the tubes, unless you are going CAI

well im confused now ppl give me more ideas

lol what is it you are confused about?
CAI is better but WAI is easier and cheaper.
Both will increase horsepower (slightly) but not really do much for mileage. Mine slightly went down, if I recall

No joke. ^^ I started with a WAI but I kept the hose on... Then I bought the CAI off MPR which was expensive. But I def like the CAI better.

i just got a drop in filter, and my gas mileage improved. maybe yours went down because you enjoy the sound of the car when you floor it. lol

na its not due to flooring, lol

I think the best idea would be to, make a WAI, put a box around the filter, and run a CAI tube into the fender. I think this would work out really well. I'm currently working on this myself, just started last night.

indeed it is. just with the filter in the engine bay... OH WAIT. thats a stock filter, with bigger tubing.
WAI = better accel, better mpg (if you baby it, and dont romp the pedal)
CAI = better Hp, less mpg
its your choice.
DO NOT CUT YOUR HOOD. Ram air = suxor on our cars.

.
I lost gas mileage (not by much) when I added the filter, and drive the same before/after the intake mod. (not flooring/romping) just normal day to day driving (when it was a daily driver)

can't imagine why. i gained at least 2mpg.
losing mpg doesn't make sense, from a physics stand point.

Yea I dunno either, but I kept a good eye on my trip odo and since I had to fill up once a week going back and forth to work, after I added the intake, I still was filling up a little earlier during the week (if I started full at Monday) I wanna say on a full tank I got 260-270 (maybe) and I think I used to get 280ish of course I am guessing now, car has been sitting for about 3 years now.

Could be due to other variables. I get ur average mileage, per 3/4 tank...
DansGen1Alero

more like 7/8s I normally had waited for light to come on and then push it another 40 or so miles.......prob why my gauge is messed up.
Could be other variables, but to best of my knowledge nothing else was changed....ie other mods, weather change might, I forgot when I put it on but maybe only had the car a couple months before adding intake.
oh well, not concerned with mileage anymore, its strictly a show car

something must be really wrong with my car because ever since i can remember i have been getting like 200 a tank....

11-20-2009, 11:51 PM
yeah i was too... then i moved to salt lake city. it's like the elevation elevated my gas mileage too... now i can get 260 before my light comes on!

Weird. Ive thought of cleaning my MAF since they say that can really have an affect on milage.... I thought it was something in the exhaust but everythings been redone from the exhaust manifold back. And I do have a heavy foot, but I dont think that heavy...

Make sure you use a cleaner specifically for MAF sensors, AND NOT CARB CLEANER!!!!!:badidea:
