Strut mounts

Im fairly mechanical, Ive replaced motors in cars...

Never really messed with suspensions though.

I got a front strut mount thats out in my car.

Now to replace this mount, do I have to fully remove the strut?

Do I have to disassemble the strut/sprint assembly?

Ive read I need to align it after...

Im hoping I can just undo it, slap a new one in an reattach the few nuts up top and be done. Got a feeling its not so easy though...

the strut mount is connected to the strut/spring assembly, so yes, you will have to undo the big ole nut on top to disassemble the whole thing. doing one of them won't be too bad. i did all 4 in a couple hours, but i encountered problems. you may need a spring compressor, unless you have a friend there.

I figured I would have to:

Jack the car up.

Undo the nut dead center- which would drop the unit down.

Remove the 3 nuts/bolts for the mount.

Simply replace and redo everything.

But Im checking here first.

Sounds like I might have to compress the spring maybe too? How about a metal bar 6' long with 240 Lbs hanging off it? Rofl

Use a spring compressor, don't mess around with that stuff, it's so easy to get serously injured and even death.
Do your life a favor and rent one from autozone for free.
It's not worth risking your life.

Whole assembly needs to come out and be taken apart. It is very easy. Please use a spring compressor, cheap rental, easy to use. Air tools may be necessary to get the strut unbolted from the spindle.

Or you can just but the all in one assembly, you get the whole strut assembly and mount, unbolt the whole old one and put the new one in.

yeah i used an air tool for the big center nut... made it MUCH easier.

He is just replacing the mount, not the whole strut and spring.

Ok, so let me get this straight.

Even to replace JUST the strut mount I need to disassemble the strut and spring?

Or I just need to compress the sprint for removal of the mount?

I can rent the proper tool. I wont risk it.

yepp the mount is what holds the spring around the strut, so use spring compressors and once u get the big nut off the top just replace the plate, in total its only gunne be 5 bolts to get it out and the one on the top

jack up
take wheel off
remove two bigassnuts on spindle
remove three smaller nuts and bolt on top of strut
whack strut out
Compress Spring
have friend hold shaft of strut with a Vice Grip
Impact it
remove All the parts
replace with new mount

Install is reverse of Removal

Holding the strut shaft with a vise grip isn't necessarily the best thing.. If you scratch the surface of the shaft it could cause a leak.

^ beat me to it, usually the impact gun has enough torque to tighten it without holding the shaft
