Hey well today I was wiring in my guages and I hooked the wire from my air/fuel guage to the black (signal) wire of my o2 sensor on my header pipe. For some reason now, the gauge goes out of control when im driving, it will fly from Lean to Rich and back and forth crazy. What could be the problem?

i thought the signal wire was purple?

i think you tapped the wrong one ill check tomorrow what color my wire is.Also you have a wide band a/f right?

It's called the way things work with a cheap narrowband sensor. You're looking at the O2 signal bouncing back and forth on either side of 14.6:1 AFR, which is all the sensor can detect.

No I have a narrowband and My wire is Black because I have a heated O2 sensor in there, the black wire connects to the purple wire, so its the signal, other wire is ground.
Heres a video I took:

That's how it is...
This is why you get a real Air-Fuel Ratio system with a wideband oxygen sensor that accurately reads all AFRs and gives you an exact numerical readout.

Well I bought the gauge and gaugepod togeather for $60.
So basically it was a free gauge.

for those that dont know, a narrow band gauge is just a ricer toy to make pretty lights dance around and give the false appearance of having performance equipment. The only way to tell if you're truly rich or lean and by how much is with a wide band, which isn't necessary unless you're doing some serious tuning.

atomic, that video is hilarious.... just priceless.
i've never seen one of these in person... wow. who the hell would want that in their car!?! (not bashing you, you didn't know) does narrowband work on any car? for anything? (and if not) why the hell would you sell it?!?

Hey now, that looks like the one i have, now of course i got it just to plug up the third gauge hole on my pod untill i found somethign better, but mine doesnt go all haywire like that.....in fact know it doesnt work at all, and I dont know if gauge went up or what, but i know it was hooked up right cuz it worked for about a year or 2.

AtomicX, would be be interested in a wideband like this?

My friend had it in his tc but never had it hooked up completely, now that we took his turbo off he'll sell it. pm me if interested

Well just did research and tested and found out that the narrowband is accurate on WOT. When I hit WOT, it goes to a steady 2 bars into the Rich section.

No, it's not, for all those reading this. We talked on AIM a bit, heheh.
Narrowband shows the operation of the upstream O2 sensor. It senses 14.6 AFR accurately. If it's more than 14.6, fuel is added, then the AFR becomes less than 14.6, so fuel is subtracted. The narrowband bounces back and forth quickly because it's adding and subtracting fuel to keep the car running as close as possible to 14.6:1.
In the graph below, the 3rd one down has the O2 data. The orange line is the wideband actual AFR reading. The purple is the narrowband O2 operation. You can see that the narrowband bounces to the limits of the graph back and forth, while the wideband remains right around 14.6 AFR, because that is what the actual air-fuel ratio in the exhaust actually is. The narrowband gauge will just show that the narrowband sensor is bouncing back and forth.
You can see below that secion the short term fuel trims (STFTs). This is the percent added and subtracted from the fueling to keep the car running around 14.6. At WOT, the narrowband pegs rich, and the STFTs go to 0. There is no fueling adjustments at wide open throttle or even heavy throttle. The car runs straight off the VE fueling tables.
