ok was kinda lazy and couldnt find the right answer to my question.
Tonite my friend who is a modder of import cars told me to but my air filter box back on my car because i am ruining the engine. I told him what kinda set up i was running which is a WAI, and he said crap will clog up the engine n stuff unless its in a air filter box, which is confusing because both air systems get their air from the same place for the most part. Can anyone confirm if it can damage my engine and how please?

 Thats the whole point of the air filter. To prevent crap from entering the motor. A cover wont do much but keep some of the motor bay pollutants from reaching the filter

if anything your air filter will get dirty faster.

He's partly right.
Rumor has it that K&N filters and others like it, the oil can get inside the engine and hurt it, but you are talking so minial damage here.
It's like saying your car's engine will die becasue of it at 155,000 miles instead of 154,000 :rolleyes2:
(No 155,000 is not the magic number for this)

I have had the same WAI setup on my 2005 stratus since 3 days after buying it (little over 4 years), and have had no issues with it, change out the filter when its disgusting, or get one you can clean, and you will have no issues.

Yeah be sure to replace it.
I had one under my hood for 6 or 7 years, the filter had holes in it

no, a WAI is totally safe. I have had one with functional ram air for about a year and have driven through rain, snow, etc and have never had a single problem.
