View Full Version : Hardwood flooring in your car

Has anybody here ever thought about replacing the carpet in your car with hardwood flooring?

worknprog.99
09-16-2009, 12:41 PM
why...

rida125
09-16-2009, 12:45 PM
Because I think it would look really cool and custom

natedawg9640
09-16-2009, 12:47 PM
well number one... don't use real hardwood floor... to much exposure to water/abrasives. and real hardwood is like 3/4 of an inch thick. if anyhting, use laminate, but then again, you'd have to epoxy it all and seal it to eliminate the water issue.

hardwood floor even where it is supposed to be is very labor intensive to keep looking good, you have to seal it and refinish it on a fairly regular basis. and that's with normal wear and tear.

rida125

Yeah sorry about the bad title. That is what I would use because I have a ton at my house. Do you think that would look good or not so much?

i think with all the bends and odd angles in the car it wil be very hard to get looking like it should be there.. the trunk tho would work and probably look decent imo

Yeah, the shape of the floor is what's going to kill ya on that one. It was hard enough when my dad did a herringbone pattern oak floor in the bed of a El Camino SS.

TdotAlero
09-16-2009, 12:59 PM
I think the best look you can get would be by fiberglassing the floor and then painting it some cool color/patterns/designs and putting mats on top.

rida125
09-16-2009, 01:02 PM
What about making the little squares in the back seats on the floor laminate? That would look ok wouldn't it. So if I did my trunkshould I do the whole thing including the spare tire cover, or just leave the spare tire cover alone?

natedawg9640
09-16-2009, 01:02 PM
maky yourself a pattern out of cardboard that lays on the flat part of your floors... transfer it onto some wood that's already snapped together, cut it out, trim it with something or finish the edges, and lay the pieces in like floor mats.

Would look better if you do the whole trunk, just cut the floor around the spare tire cover, so you can still get to it.

rida125
09-16-2009, 01:04 PM
Ok and should I cut that part of the carpet out or just leave it in and put the laminate in right over the top of it?

I have to agree with the above statement. On a scale of 1 to 10 Billies, this gets a 7. In the right car this would probably be ok though.

09-16-2009, 01:37 PM
Why would it not turn out good?

Its not that it wouldnt look "good" its just there is such a huge margin for it to be botched. And its more than just the wood, its how it flows, how it looks, the angles, the color scheme of the car, there are so many factors that are making an epic fail all that much more likely.

rida125
09-16-2009, 02:08 PM
Ok, but what if I began making other things in the car with laminate

09-16-2009, 03:01 PM
as sweet as it would be to see...dont do it

AGT
09-16-2009, 03:01 PM
Well in the case of the S-10. Nothing else coordinates with it. Also the laminate needs fasteners as you can tell compared to a house install where the glue or tongue and groove holds it.

worknprog.99
09-16-2009, 03:02 PM
it will get the same responses as a beat up honda with a whale tale on the back, "huh? why?"

rida125

So some of you don like it because it's to different for you?

AGT
09-16-2009, 03:10 PM
So some of you don like it because it's to different for you?

I like the idea but in the S10 its crap for previously specified reasons and also it doesn't make a nice flat floor. You have a valley so there is gonna be a mix of carpet and wood. I know its okay in a house but this is a car. You might consider diamond plate before this

rida125
09-16-2009, 03:16 PM
But I think the trunk would be an easier place to do it, and it would make it easier to keep clean.

AGT
09-16-2009, 03:19 PM
Yeah but easier to scratch too.

I would think the trunk alone would be fine but only that. The floor would still need mats because the earth is dirty

FrankTheTank
09-16-2009, 03:31 PM
why did u ask for opinions if you already have your mind made up?

lonnie
09-16-2009, 03:44 PM
My opinion: Bad idea, will not look right no matter how its done!!!

HazMatt24
09-16-2009, 04:21 PM
I would think the trunk alone would be fine but only that.

the problem with only doing the trunk is now it's not going to flow with the rest of the car, and it will look tacky when the lid is open or the back seat is down

rida125
09-16-2009, 04:23 PM
But if the trunk did look really good i could go from there to trying to do that with the rest of the car.

AGT
09-16-2009, 04:33 PM
Yeah but then would the rest of the care really look good. The other thing is the time and effort you will put in will make its resale very tough. I have never thought about wanting a car and said...
\
You know its okay but if it had wood floors that would be great.

Plus winter will be hard on em

rida125
09-16-2009, 04:59 PM
yeah, well i really hope it looks nice

cherrington17
09-16-2009, 06:29 PM
There is a reason its never done (or consistantly done). Stick w. Remodeling contemporary thought on car design... the wheel exists... u can't radically change it now and expect people to like it (or it to work)

AbHeLlRaZoR
09-16-2009, 06:33 PM
wood floors only look good in houses and cabins, do diamond plating instead it will look a million times better.

cherrington17

Rida, ur in minnesota.... w. Wood, how are u going to absorb moisture, and how are you going to prevent warping?

rida125
09-16-2009, 06:55 PM
ok so when you say diamond platting do you mean replace the carpet with actual diamond plate metal or just mats?

rida125
09-16-2009, 06:57 PM
because i really do like the look of diamond plate, and i just looked at some mats and they look really dumb, but this new diamond plate idea im beginning to like.

09-16-2009, 07:01 PM
the only good idea in this thread is the "dont do it" concept. wood or diamond plate covering the entire floor is going to be terribly ugly and nearly impossible to accomplish.

AbHeLlRaZoR
09-16-2009, 07:02 PM
ok so when you say diamond platting do you mean replace the carpet with actual diamond plate metal or just mats? kind of, it would be too heavy to do the whole floor, but do it like floor mats but actually mount it to the floor.

cherrington17
09-16-2009, 07:04 PM
Diamond plate floormats look slick.... in the right car....

rida125
09-16-2009, 07:05 PM
but do it like floor mats but actually mount it to the floor.

well i would think about getting the stuff thats .063 inches thick because that would weigh the least and how would i go about attaching it to the floor. would i have to cut a square out of the carpet?

yeah cut chunks of the carpet out, as far as fastening it goes I don't know, I thought rivits would look clean but I don't recommend drilling your floor boards. so in conclusion it's another bad idea.

cherrington17
09-16-2009, 07:12 PM
Diamond plate can fit any car... just depends on the styling. Richie had them...they looked badass. In my car? They'd be a sore thumb. It all depends on the design scheme

09-16-2009, 07:14 PM

silicon will not cut it. maybe jb weld but I have no idea if it holds as well as they claim it does.

rida125
09-16-2009, 07:19 PM
because what im thinking right now about putting diamond plate in, is that if i did that i would cut out the carpet square a little bit smaller than the diamond plate so that the carpet would flow under the diamond plate.

cherrington17
09-16-2009, 07:22 PM
If ur doing diamond plate,
1. u better have silver/chrome accents other places.
2. Just lay it over the carpet. (Could use neodynium magnets to prevent it from moving)
3. Prepare for snow/salt to destroy the edges around the plating.

rida125
09-16-2009, 09:09 PM
what if i put like some sort of rubber around the edge's of the diamond plate?

Bad idea.

rida125
09-17-2009, 12:09 AM
ok but would the whole diamond plate thing really be that bad? and i mean in the winter when i go to get my car washed weekly i will clean the diamond plate with it like that. so whats so bad with that? i guess i dont know, i dont really see whats so bad about diamond plate mat things, but actually using sheet metal with a rubber edge to catch the dirt and what not.

rida125
09-17-2009, 12:11 AM
neodynium magnets

cherrington17
09-17-2009, 01:03 PM
still not a fan of having a metal mat. they only exist for show purposes, i prefer to have functionality.

hence why i'm made fun of for my big red rubber "racing X" walmart mats. but anyone who wants to laugh, can laugh at the amount of salt i wash out of them every spring.

jayson_waltz
09-17-2009, 01:18 PM
diamond plating wouldn't be too bad, lots better than hardwood flooring. it would still cover your carpet and be functional as long as you cleaned them often enough so stuff doesn't pile up on them and fall off onto the carpet. i know pawzbear has diamond plated mats in her cobalt ss, it doesn't look too bad imo. if you are still worried about the carpet you could always do what i do and cover the carpet in then dealer floor plastic like what is stuck on in new cars.

go to a metal scrap yard. You can buy diamond plate cheap. You live in MN, Owatanna has a good one.

Living in Mn, you should do a mod like heated floors for the winter. Refrigrated trunk for the summer. Something wierd (since you seem to think it's unique) But usefull.

Do you have a g/f
Make her a foot bath on the passanger side floorboard. Theres nothing worse then a g/f with stinky ass feet stinking up your hardwood floors.

Remember the KISS (keep it simple stupid) Start with simple "unique" mods. Don't jump in to a project thats going to make or literally break your car. Start with some tint. Paint interior. Don’t jump in to "I'm going to make my car fly!!" or some crazy out of wack idea. I have to agree with everyone wood/diamond plate floors=Fail. But hey we could all be wrong and you are some genius. Alot of the cool shit out there is a result of people saying don't do it. It's dumb. Look at lambo doors for example. Back in the day somebody came up with that, and I'm sure the guy next to him was like wtf are you dumb? Why would that help at all. So don't take criticism to heart (which you seem not to) Some people will say its dumb. Sometimes their right, sometimes their wrong. But in this case they are probably 99.9% right.

I've done that to the trunk of my car. IMO it looks terrible. I took it out in less than a month. The only thing it helps out is if you have a system. It is done to a few Scions i've saw on Cardomain.

cherrington17
09-17-2009, 04:43 PM
Well I thought that this website would be good for these kinda threads

unique ideas, yes. we'll run with them. Go ahead and bounce ideas off us... but FIRST, think about these simple things...

1) is it possible? Yes/No
2) Is it monetarily feasible? Yes/No
3) Does it serve a viable purpose? Yes/No
4) Has it been done, or something similar? Yes/No
5) If it was possible, would others be interested in the same? Yes/No
6) Does it look good? Yes/No

if you can't get 4 of 5... its not worth doing.

We'll help you clarify ideas, but if everyone collectively disagrees with you, its probably because you haven't thought it through properly. Coming up with an idea, is easy.... but to implement it, you need to look at all angles.

The door style was dictated by Gandini's desire for an innovative design, and by his concern over the car's extremely poor rear visibility. In order to reverse the car, the driver would be able to lift the door and lean his upper body out of the hatch in order to see behind the car. The first production car to feature the doors was a Lamborghini, Gandini's Countach; the sports car's wide chassis created similar problems to those found on the Carabo, calling for the unusual door configuration. The doors were used on the Countach's successor, the Diablo, on its replacement, the Murciélago, and on a low-production run derivative of the Murciélago called the Reventón.[2] Having used the exotic door style for several of its cars, the Italian manufacturer has become synonymous with the implementation of scissor doors, which are sometimes colloquially referred to as "Lambo doors".

So I'm sure people were hating on Marcello Gandini's idea. Even though it was to reverse rather then looks
