Just pointing it out

Round table sounds good, is that all we have planned. If I remember correct the round table is quite pricey isn't it?

11-21-2003, 10:07 PM
We can get hammered at my place first cause it is much cheaper then we can decide where to go from there. Let me know what you guys think.

havik
11-21-2003, 10:30 PM
lol, if we're hammered we shouldn't be driving the alero's around town ;) But your place is close to quite a few places we could go to afterwards

Hey all....
I'm assuming that the meet didn't go down? I think it'd be cool to meet you all....

Oh yeah... does anyone drive a black 2-dr with a MTX sticker on the rear driversside window? Just wondering because I see it like every day...

Later,
Scott

I drive a white coupe with a razzi spoiler. Ok how bout next friday nite?

havik
11-22-2003, 05:00 PM
Black 2dr, so not me.

Next Friday sounds ok. I have an idea (just to get it out there). We go eat supper at Perkin's and then go to the Que Club for drinks and pool.

Make your own suggestions though, we'll pick the best idea.

AleroSS
11-23-2003, 01:20 AM
Yeah I'd be down for perkins, pool, and drinks, but i may have to work for a bit on friday nite, so i may come a lil later, but lemme find out on monday from my boss, and i'll report back - anyone wanna play a game of pool for $50, i've never played before i swear! :P :D

Next friday could be cool... I'm assuming you're talking on Pembina?

havik
11-23-2003, 03:16 AM
Yeah, Pembina is the area, that's where we're all roughly located. If that's not too far for you??

Btw - I just mentioned this to my gf and apparently we had plans for friday, oops :( I'll talk to her (she's my boss, lol) and report back. But if our plans are still on would we be able to move this to Saturday?

boarder211
11-24-2003, 12:43 AM
Nope... Pembina's not too far... I'm a westwood (that's by the downs for all who don't know) boy, but I drive out to the U of M every day, so I think I can swing that.

Fri or Sat's cool for me, though I can't be out too late 'cuz I work bright and early the next morns... :(

AleroSS
11-24-2003, 03:56 AM
Yeah, I think Saturday would be ok to, but I have this foggy image of me having committed Saturday out already... So I would not be able to commit. Plus I'd prefer Friday, So Chad, If you can get Kim/your Boss lol, to flex a bit, I'd likely be able to completely commit... and if all goes well, either nite I should have quite the surprise to show you guys - fresh on the car

havik
11-24-2003, 12:48 PM
Ok, friday sounds like it's on then. My gf and I moved the plans to Saturday :D

Anytime after 6 is good for me. I work till 5:30 and it takes me nearly a half hour to get home in the traffic. I'd have to go home first to change and get my gf.

11-26-2003, 05:49 PM
Hey guys, rob chad and i have agreed that we should scrap the perkins end of the meet, and just all meet up at the pool hall... lets say 9:30? if anyone has any questions email me at labz1@hotmail.com, or give my cell a shout at 227-8553... anyone have any objections to posting this on heights as well (strictly for alero members only though)

We'll be the guys surrounded by all the Alero groupies. They just love us in the peg

4 Alero's, not bad considering it's 4 in the same city and not 4 near the city. btw, Scott, we gotta talk about building a sub box and painting the trim pieces again. Landon, I don't approve of your "I love rice" windshield decal. And Chad, I had to walk to my car (actually not a bad walk but still :huh?: lol)

11-29-2003, 07:28 PM
Naw, we all left in Chad's vehicle and went to his place for a few more drinks. My gf and I were going to cab it back to my vehicle but the cab must've been hiding somewhere outside b/c we didn't see it and were too cold to wait, so we walked  Wasn't too bad though, just a few minute walk

That don't sound good at all man! You doing ok???

havik
12-01-2003, 06:56 PM
It's all good at the moment but I want a change. Too much financial dependence for my taste. Which isn't a bad thing, but when the people your dependent on have a "form" of control over you than it's not cool. Plus, to be fair, they're going to be going through a moment of financial uncertainty, so it'd be best if they didn't have to worry about me for awhile. All I know is I'm planning on starting fresh soon, and while the Alero is in my plans at the moment, I still might have to do without it :( BTW - if anyone can hook me up with a job possibly mid-January then let me know. :)

EDIT: I ranted so I editted what I said

havik
12-02-2003, 12:09 AM
heh heh, you posted while I editted it. In a sense I'm kicking myself out. I don't live with them, but they help my rent, bills, etc... Which sounds sweet but I don't like the "control" they have. Plus they plan on moving here in the fall (from our home town) and that'll cost quite a bit of money :D So if they don't have to worry about me then that should be a plus for them

12-02-2003, 12:50 AM

I see what you're going through man, and though I'm not in exactly the same position, I kinda know what it must be like.

As for the job, I could likely get you one at Staples if you really wanted one! It's not that bad of a place to work.

Gotta love this freaking city! I agree with Landon though... I want summer to come here now! I've got a huge space in my desktop that I've been working on, just waiting for a good shot of my car that I can use... the only ideas that I've come up with so far for good shots...

1) Take a hairdryer outside and try and clear a big enough patch of grass... paint to desired colour, then take the picture.

2) Drive into the wall of the freaking golf dome until I can force the car inside, snap pictures before dome comes crashing down, and sprint away before the cops come.

Other than that, I'm stuck waiting another 4-5 months before the damn snow's gone and the grass is green enough for me to find a field and snap some shots! :(

well rob, i'd suggest posting in the buy and sell on heights, but heights is down today and tomorrow for site upgrades, but im sure you could find a good deal on there... I wouldnt suggest goin with the stock headunit, find something where you will have more control - My sony headunit has a 7 band eq (which I LOVE) and has an independant Sub preout. hey dude, pardon the double post, but if your lookin for a new sub/amp combo, the best way to decide would be to consider a few factors

How much money do you have for the gear or are looking to spend?
How much money are you setting aside for install?
What kind of music do you listen to?
What sort of deck do/will you have?
Do you pound your system hard??
How much trunk space are you willing to sacrifice?
What are some of your favorite brands or brands you have liked/disliked in the past?
Ported or Sealed Box?

I personally stand by Alpine when it comes to my choice for subs and amps, because for the buck, you are getting a hella lotta bang. There are better subs and amps out there, but you get what you pay for, and they start getting very expensive fast. I currently am running a Type R 10" in a sealed enclosure, and it pounds awesomely. Other people prefer RF, Coustic (a really nice sub too), Boston Accoustic, Sorny Xplods (:P), JL audio, Kicker, and the list goes on. If you want help selecting a sub, or any info, answer those questions i posted above, and it'll help me recommend a sub for your application. If you wanna take a listen to the single 10" Type R that Im running, drop me a line sometime and we can meet up. Talk to you later, and if you also want any suggestions on good places/salespeople to deal with, I'd be glad to help you out and ensure you get a good deal.

Landon.... Alpine would be my second choice. I've always been a fan of their quality and value.

As for a meet, I'd be interested, but I have a lot going on near that time of the month. Let me know when it is and I'll let you know if I can make it.

b-spot
03-01-2004, 04:43 PM
Not from winnipeg, but i flew over it last week :P

Go alpine though. Especially for the amp. Even their lil v-powers (formerly v-12's) are super underrated. Those monoblocks pound.

I'm runnin a 12" type S, and the only problem I have with it is it rattles the hell outta my car. Type R's are awesome though, friggen bomb proof.

AleroSS
03-01-2004, 06:16 PM
Yeah, like b-spot said, the nice thing about alpine is their gear is under-rated, unlike other lower end products (pioneer, sorny :P etc) that occasionally will over rate their gear to attract more buyers. Plus many of alpine amps will have some degree of protection to prevent you from blowing your sub accidentally - They arent fool proof, but they work a lot better than other lower end brands, and will come in handy if you are just starting out with car audio equipment...

Well I'm up for a meet just hit up my email its in my profile and SS here's my answers

How much money do you have for the gear or are looking to spend? looking to spend bout 3500
How much money are you setting aside for install? as much as it takes
What kind of music do you listen to? everything from lost prophets *fav right now* to techno and some rap

What sort of deck do/will you have? Jvc

Do you pound your system hard?? Hell yeah I used to be sound tech for a friends band
How much trunk space are you willing to sacrifice? enough to get it in

What are some of your favorite brands or brands you have liked/disliked in the past? dunno this is my first car

Ported or Sealed Box? and whats the difference between the 2?

Wow dude, it looks like you certainly have a serious budget for a truly kicking system. I gather that you would be aiming for more "higher to mid/higher end gear" and the best place that I would recommend you check out would be Brian Reimer. Depending on your ear, and background in being an Audio Tech (I am an Audio engineer myself - studio and live environments) I would say that youd be best taking down a disc of some music that you listen to, and have a listen to some of their coustic, and Boston Accoustic line of gear. Also worth checking out is the Morel line at Advance. The reason I recommend Brian Reimer is basically their staff is not on commission, and have no problem with you coming in there simply to listen to different brands, and to learn about their product line. If you do decide to head down to Advance to check out Morel, ask for either Richard or Preston, and tell em that Landon with the Red Alero( with poppers) sent you, and Im sure they'll take care of you. They also can get you another branch of Alpine, I think it is called the X Series or Type X - basically a higher end line of alpine, even above Type R's... Im not sure which brands to suggest to you for the genre's that you are into because I dont listen to primarily Techno, so Im not familiar with the brands best suited for Techno, but just like certain shoes are meant for certain activities, well certain brands are best for certain types of music. If you are comfortable enough with online buying, you might wanna find out which speakers/equipment you like and then there are some AWESOME deals on the net that will be cheaper than anywhere else in the city. As for your install, there are very few GOOD installers in town. This being said, you may wanna do your research if you are looking for a really intense or serious install. If you have been considering any crazy or custom installs, I have a good friend who does WICKED fiberglass custom work for sub enclosures or just dash parts, just pm me and I can get you his email - oh and btw, he is local. As far as ported or sealed boxes, it will sometimes depend on the sub, but basically a ported box will allow you to get a cleaner better sounding bass tone without too much distortion, but you will be taking a hit as far as SPL. It will not be as loud in most cases, as a sealed box, but everyone has their preferences. I personally, with the Type R 10" that im running, am using a Sealed box, and for my non-dynomatted car, it sounds fine. Anyhow, I hope I have answered most of your questions, though Im sure I will have more information come to me as I can never organize my thoughts into one post, lol. Anyways, drop me a pm, or post if you have any more questions or issues, and I'd be glad to share what I know on the topic. BTW, which band were you a Sound Tech for, and what sorta other work have you done in the sound biz?

Oh, and Rob, would it be safe to say that this is now the winnipeg "anything goes" sorta thread where if any of us pegger's have any questions about cars, stereos, etc we just post here if we want local feedback?

That being said, have any of you guys (Mainly directed at Rob) changed the light bulbs, or swapped in LEDs into your guage cluster? Do any of you know where I could find instructions (preferably with pictures on how to do it) to help me out. Thanks alot guys,

Landon

Yeah, that's my How to thread.

The instructions are fairly descriptive I got from molson when he sold me his gauges. Plus I added a bit more description to them. I'll go take some pics right now...time me :D

K, I uploaded the pics to my site.

The last pic is where the "Trip" button is connected to the wire (kind of a birds eye view from the button). This is where you need to unclip the wire and reclip it after when your done.

Hey thanx bro, the instructions are good, and well done with the pics. I am still left with a couple of questions:

a) Do you have any nite pics of your guages and what colour they light up now?
B) Is the only type of bulb I'll need a Number 24?
c) How many 24's do I need?
d) will the colour of the bulb be the colour that shines thru, or are there tint strips inside that will change the colour that shines thru?

Damn man! I thought that you'd remember how to take apart the gauges! ;)

There is some tint on the inside of the gauge cluster. It turns it from a yellowish/white light into the lovely green/blue light that we all know... It all depends on what bulbs you want to change! The major bulbs are the 24's... There are some smaller bulbs that can be changed... but I forget at this time. You'll need 5 bulbs for the gauges, unless you want to change some of the warning lights... I think that that's what the other ones are. Can you back me up on this one Havik? BTW... nice job on the install pics man! :)

If you want to see what the stock gauges do to the light, here's how it looks... You can see the standard, 60W bulb in the background... if you're wondering how the colour changes.

Oh yeah... I should get my new & improved Dr. J Gauges in the coming week! :D

The bulbs that light up the gauges are 194, and there are 5 of them. I have blue ones, which I bought from Canadian Tire (2 per set), but they only light up the tinted region as Scott has mentioned. The white region in my gauges is still mostly white, with a hint of blue. But the numbers and needles light blue (the needles not so much though).

If you want a deep dark blue colour, enough to light the gauge area as well, then led's are the way to go. I haven't looked into this but I imagine it's not hard to do. I think sound_extreme installed led's into his gauge cluster. If that's what your looking to do then let me know, I have an idea I'd like to try as well.

I wouldn't mind being around for that. I'd like to see what they end up looking like when it's all done.

On a side note, I had breakfast at my father in-law's this morning. I was talking about what I wanted to do with the car when it's off warranty. We discussed the pros and cons of turbo vs. supercharger.

In the end, we both concluded that the supercharger would be best for a number of reasons. The first and most important factor is our climate. With the cold weather we get here, you have to wait for your turbo to cool down before you shut the car down, second of all is turbo lag which gets worse in colder conditions. Finally, the power is always there on demand with a supercharger. So, once this puppy is off warranty, get ready to see a supercharged Alero coming to the 'Peg. :D

I wouldn't mind seeing some of your cars either. Not sure what I'm going to do for wheels / tires yet. Probably go with the 17's. I won't be doing that until my tires are worn. I'll do the tires / rims at the same time.

I agree that you will be dealing with lag with a Turbo however jeff, the Turbo offers you the option of turning up/down the boost levels, which means essentially you can turn off the boost for winters etc. Plus the potential on a properly tuned Turbo (for our applications) is much higher. Granted there is much more tuning and such to do with a turbo, however, a turbo will offer you much higher numbers, unless youre dealing with a bigger engine (v8+) then, youd be better off with a Blower rather than a Turbo. If you wanna read the "turbo bible" check out Maximum Boost, by Corky Bell, it will tell you everythin you need to know. The power on a Turbo will always be there, just like on a Supercharger, but it will take (normally) less than a second for the turbo to spool up (this is called turbo lag). As far as cooling times, this is what turbo timers are for, which enable you to walk away from the car, and let a controller turn off the car anywhere from a few moments to two minutes... You will have to use higher octane gas on either. Anyhow if you have any other questions, hit me up on MSN, i will be headin off for tonite now, but i'd be glad to help ya out.

Landon, I agree and disagree to your response.

We discussed all the points you mentioned in length (and great dismay to my wife and mother in-law) over breakfast this morning. Ever been to the races at Brainerd, MN? Almost all of the guys racing there are using a supercharger instead of turbo.... and they're using a WAI instead of CAI.

Warm air is easier to compress than cold air. Granted, cold air produces more ponies in the lower RPMs (without TC/SC) because you're getting more oxygen into your engine.

Yes, turbo you can tune and dial in for more power. However, a supercharger can be also be as effective with the right components and engine modifications. Here's another downfall to TC's..... they get DANG hot. When you have a TC under the hood of your vehicle, it produces extreme temperatures and puts excessive wear on a number of parts including your electrical components..... unless you mount it remotely. The only company that supplies remote turbo kits is STS, and they don't have an application for an Alero or GA.

Here's a page from STS Turbo's site explaining this....

Why remote mounting? (STS Turbochargers) (http://www.ststurbo.com/____why_remote_mounting)

I'm off to bed, but PM me with your number so we can hook up sometime.

Hey Jeff, What sorta cars are you referring to that are racing at Brainerd? The reason I ask this is because normally for us 4 and 6 bangers, the booster of choice is normally a turbo, but once you get into big block's or generally larger v8's with quite a bit of displacement, youre more than likely gonna be using a s/c. As far as heat, there are a wide array of options for cooling your system, such as an air to air intercooler, or other ones such as an air to water cooling system. Plus, although you are incorporating more individual parts when adding a turbo system onto the car, and though that means you have more chance of parts going bad, this also means that if one part gets damaged, you only have to replace THAT part. Personally, any 4 or smaller 6 banger setup you see designed for racing will normally be turbo'd, with the odd (bigger 6 banger) coming with a blower.

As for the WAI/CAI debate, I cant see why theyd be using a WAI over a CAI. Many GNX owners, who are running a 3.8 t/c setup, normally have a CAI running off the front bumper fog light housing. I will look more into this issue, and get back to you on it but I really cant see too many 4 or 6 bangers using a WAI over a CAI...

Want to see what a supercharger does to a 3.8L V6? Same as those found in a 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP?

Hey scott, you might wanna look away at this next post, but after re-reading jeffs post about Brainerd, I have realized that he must be talking about an NHRA sanctioned track, and according to NHRA rules, I have heard that V8 guys have been restricted from using Turbo systems due to some (dumb) rules made back in the 70's. So this is why the big block boys use blowers to increase their power, but I bet if you spoke to any of them, they'd be lying if they didnt say theyd rather be running a turbo setup....
