Did you cut a wire accidently?

How's your alternator? Last time my alternator took a crap, all the gauges went to 0 and the interior lights went out. My car was running off straight battery.

alternator is fine. I drive this car every weekend. And To my knowledge no wire was cut. Back 1 1/2 yrs ago I parked the car. I parked it because the gauges and interior lights went out. And the car had a bad drive-ability issue. The drive-ability ended up being a coolant temp sensor. So I my swapped my dash and also replaced the bcm thinking I would solve the problem. It didn't. Being a mech I deal with faulty parts alot. So I figured maybe the new bcm was faulty and replaced it again. STILL not fixed. All bcms (even original) give me the same result. WIERD? So I'm wondering if it is a cut wire. But the wire to the Ipc would be different from the interior lights. Even different fuses. It would even be different wires on the bcm output. I also checked the connector for corrosion on the terminals. Due to the fact that n-bodys have a habit to leak water there and bcm starts to corrode. IM SO F-ING STUCK ITS SCARY!!

Wait the coolant temp sensor was bad so you replaced the dash?

If the problem wasn';t happening before you replaced the dash, maybe a wire or 2 got cut or pinched off.

Our clusters are a "Drive by wire" system. Everything is electrical, but you already know that ;)

The problem occurred before I replaced the dash I replaced the dash as just a cheap mod (NOT TO FIX ANYTHING).. I'll do a little more digging tomorrow and let you know what I come up with

off topic but how is a dash cheap!? how much?

is the dash from the grand am and the bcm from an alero?

if so then the BCM is not set up to run those gauges

not sure what to tell you on this one ... possibly a GA bcm or alero bcm with ga code will be the answer

alero Bcm CAN run grand am ipc. But the new pcm bcm is programmed to a 2000 grand am. And the dash cost 500 for the parts car. Wich I stole everything out of. tranny, motor, suspension .etc.

are the vin #'s matching in both the the BCM and PCM

bkathsalero
09-18-2009, 10:18 AM
yes the vins match. Heres what Im going to try tonight

(1) Check terminals on dimmer switch
(2)follow .35 gray wire ip lamp feed for gauges
(3)back probe bcm and gauge cluster connector for power
(4) Check wires going into stero (there is a ip lamp feed and a ip lamp fuse output wire) May have altered during install of stero

The reason I'm stuck on wiring is the fact that I have HVAC control lamps and shift position lamps. So I'm obviously getting interior lamps up to that point. Why I dont get it in the gauge cluster is the question. Thats for diagnosing the lamps.

I will not gain gauges from this
(the only thing I can think of is a IPC ground out to take out my gauges.)Because the input for the gauges is throught the pcm.

You didn't say to swapped to a GA dash.

That would be the problem. the GA has a different wiring set-up

No th grand am has the exact same wiring set up. Its just different looks.
But more and more research is telling my that my radio is shorting out my gauges

What year is your IPC and what year is your PCM/BCM?

bkathsalero

IPC, BCM, PCM are all 2000. They are all from the same car

Problem solved: So this car is a back burner withall my work coming into my garage. Not complaining by any means. But today I had the true chance to diagnose the issue:

The wires and connector for the grand am and alero ARE the same. The difference is the pin locations. Here are the differences:

Just had to move the wires to the correct pin.
(so if anyone ever does a dash swap like me, you need to do this.

you have no gauges "i have that problem right now" or just need a new a/c compressor?

well when my car went all crazy the speedo an RPM dials did not work and the mechanic put a new sensor in and everything worked fine after that.
