Check your fuses. If you used the ilumination wire in your harness when you installed your headunit it may be incorectly hoked up.

if you make it unbelievably difficult to read, i guarantee, the majority of people who know what they are talking about, will just close the window before they make it half way through. Punctuation exists to make life easier. This isn't ancient Rome... use it!
now on to the problem. Most likely.. its a fuse. passanger side panel, top right. If not, there is also one under the hood. #45? can't quite remember, but it sounds familiar.
Also, your PRND321 and gauges are out? (all interior lights?)

QFT i just did this

hmm, take the cluster out and check for blown bulbs? may be there was a surge (sounds like you have an audio system, so im wondering if a surge happened and blew the bulbs)

your impression of me typing is funny because i actually understood
what you typed and i have leds in the cluster so i cant just take them out and look a them to see if they are blown
and if there was a surge how come everything else on my gauges work
wouldnt it have blown the entire thing or better yet why wasnt the fuse blown
im just askin not tryin to sound like a smart @$$
i have some electrical back knowledge i really didnt pay attention in class
but i thought thats what the fuses was for so you dont damage anything in your car

Punctuation dose make reading a little easier. my eyes were crossing trying to read your post >_< It may not seem like a big deal compared to your car, but if people cannot read your post well, then they cant give an answer.
O and its good to see another Michigan Alero guy, you should caravan with us to the summer meet/cook out thing. lol

I'm having the same issue with mine, and all i can think of is the wiring at the radio. I have changed bulbs, fuses, and some wiring. The guy that fooked up my radio install may have put wires in the wrong places, so make sure your stuff is connected correctly, and that its all plugged in.

your dimmer switch might be shot.
did you PULL the fuses out and TEST them? (continuity meter)
you might have shorted something. (connected a power to a ground somewhere)
work backwards. Disconnect the last thing you connected, and see if anything comes on. If not, then move to the next one back from that.

ok ill try both of those but i dont have that meter any more it was stolen
is there a way to check them with out the meter
and ill go back and check the radio connections i do have one question would the illumination wire need to be hooked up in order for the dash to work right

still no punctuation? lol

No you don't need your ilumination wire hooked up, but if it is just cut and not caped it could have shorted out.
The other thing is if you crossed the wires during instalation if you used a harness kit.

ok i kinda figured that and i did leave it uncapped. but the leds work and no fuses are blown could i have fried the gauge cluster all together.

now, someone wants to tell me this.......but you weren't talking to me I know. Anyways, which wire is the illumination wire? If i can check that myself it will save me the money I was gonna spent re-wiring the whole car :P

^^The gray wire is the ilumination wire.

naw i dont cap my wires at all.
i use the very usefull electric tape on the ends of my wires.
PappaSmurf
08-16-2009, 12:31 AM
do you bend the end of the wire up, to where it is meeting the same wire creating a loop before taping? Without doing this and still taping, the taping could have came loose and fried it.

So I have the exact same problem as this guy. I did it over a year ago and yes I know, I shouldnt have been playing with wires. The illumination wire touched something im 100% positively sure. I have checked all fuses multiple times, bought a new gauge cluster then realized that wasnt the problem, bought gauge overlays and they worked miracles, but I want my HVAC lights and lights around my shifter to work too. I need some helps fellas. Also my Dimmer switch doesnt seem to work and my manual light switch doesnt work. Last Christmas i Couldnt turn my lights off when driving through the park, I really want to fix that this year haha.

by multifunction, you mean his dimmer switch, right? if the wire you were playing with, was gray... thats only for lighting...
get a new dimmer switch, and you should be fine.

Well, whenever I turn my dimmer switch all the way up the interior lights come on like they're suppose to just not my dash, havocs, and gears. It may have been an orange wire its been a year like i said. And any idea on whats wrong with the manual lights?
cherrington17
12-16-2009, 04:46 PM
there aren't very many orange wires. one goes from your Multifunction switch to your Auto Park Lamp Relay and your Park LPS fuse.
3 orange wires come out of your BCM for power to your internal lights.
(1 powers the lights, the other 2 go directly to fuses)
thats almost ALWAYS the INTLPS fuse. either under the hood, or top right of the passanger fuse box.
if not... you might have burned out that small segment of your BCM. not quite sure how... but i can't give you a good reason why they aren't working, other then that.

So I decided to buy some leds and hook them up the way cherrington's how-to says. I'm pretty sure this will work as long as i hook them up to something that is hot and something that is ground.
Sound good?
cherrington17
01-04-2010, 08:29 PM
yes. Use the dimmer switch power and ground.
you can use any gray illumination wire, and black ground wire, though.

thanks man!
every mechanic was goin to charge me 100 plus to fix this and half of them had no clue what the problem was in the first place even after i told them what i had done

many "shop" mechanics know physical/mechanical stuff... but no knowledge of electrical stuff, at all.
its kinda sad, but at the same time, a bunch of moderate mechanical stuff, about nearly all makes of cars....takes up alot of brain room.
