View Full Version : I broke my ear

Attempt to swap the UIM today:

I say attempt because I stopped working because of a pre existing problem, not because I couldn't do it.

My old mech when he closed up shop nd got out of the business, my wife's Altima and the Redog were the last cars to service. I did have the Delta down there but I did the work myself on that car (had to swap the timing chain cover)

Anyway he did the LIMG fix on the car and in the process broke the ear and repaired it with RTV.

I removed that bolt first because I knew that was going to be the problem and wanted to see if it fit in the new mani without modifaction. Well it fit just fine, but the ear is hanging on like when you were losing a baby tooth and it was hanging on by a thread. Plus it was RTV'ed to the UIM as well. So I stopped work put back the bolt, carefully and the coil bracket bolts I took out and figured the hell with it. Well that's not going to work either.

My mech did a crappy job on the LIMG because it's leaking again. He told me he used the Fel-Pro metal gaskets, now I doubt it. If he did, he didn't RTV it very well.

I don't feel comfortable enough to do the LIMG myself, so it's off to the shop.

Not too upset, well maybe just a little bit, but I get to have on my P&P manifolds from WOT-TECH and the lower I have is a 00 which will flow a hell of a lot better than the 99 I currently have. The 00 and 03+ flow better, or about the same, as a ported 99.

I ordered the gasket kit from WOT and a new upper raditor hose and 180* thermo (HYP-1020) from Summit and got totally free shipping  I bought this hose for the upper and I going to have the lower changed too, but just a stock replacement.

Anyway the same time he did the LIMG, he did rear struts and front brakes on the wife's Altima. $900 for everything (struts are very expensive for that car) Within 2 weeks the brakes were feeling pretty bad and still are. Tons of pad, just a shitty replacement.

If I can do it, you can do it. But it is time consuming.

if I can do it... a monkey can.

...but then again... i'm extremely proficient at dismantling things.... its like i was born to reverse engineer.

^im sure he could do it, its just the whole do you have the time? do you have the tools? do you have the location?

lot of stuff factors in, i dont blame ya for letting it go to the shop, i just hope you found a good price for it

Good trustworthy mechanics are few and far between, I've found. Too bad, Ken, that you don't live closer to here. Billy could get all of that set up and done correctly at his shop or in his driveway (or in Mike's like the Daytona's timing chain was).

That would be great, Red Bank area's only like an hour away. I wouldn't call that far.

He did offer to do the Delta's posi and I was going to take him up on it too. until the car was totalled :(

It's the time factor with doing the work myself. With the baby anf working 70 hours a week, I need the car like, now. With no Delta I cant be down my DD.

Adam typed the following Quote. I'm holding him while typing.

What is it leaking? Coolant?

If that's the case, it's not an RTV issue, period!

Are you talking about the Red Bank (New Bethlehem area) in Armstrong County, PA?
That's where my wife's family lives, I go out there all the time to visit.

Very little, I think it's the gasket itself.

Red Bank, NJ

Where's "New Bethleham?" I know where the old one is

Is it more matter of WHEN than IF on the LIMG thing? I suspect that mine still has the original, since it onyl has 24,000 miles on it.

I think I paid $400 to get my LIMG fixed. That was almost 3 years ago, and it's still going strong.... I'm going to miss that mech. $400 seems a bit high, but then again, it took them a while to get it apart cause the motor was hot....

New Bethlehem is really in the middle of nowhere, on the border of Armstrong County and Clarion County, PA. Red Bank is a borough(sp) I think of New Bethlehem.

I know what ya mean. My 3400 has somewhere around 40k on it with the original gasket.
