View Full Version : Stupid 5 Speed Swap

So I finally got down to denver this week to swap the built 5 speed into the alero. I picked up an 05 3400 motor out of monte carlo, looked the same, i knew some brackets had to be swapped, whatever, simple stuff. Got the flywheel and clutch bolted up, bolted the tranny up, everything looks good, drop it into car, some custom mounting brackets and everything looks great. Next morning i start on the bottom and hook everything up, A/C starter, ABS, Wiring harness, Fuel lines, etc. Get on top of the motor and the nightmares begin, 3 hours and 4 powering steering pumps later, I realize it's either yank the motor and new timing cover so I can get the power steering pump to line up, or I get a 3400 from a grand am or alero. http://www.605racing.com/Forums/images/smilies/rant.gif So an hour later the motor is out and i'm very frustrated. Next morning and a 12 pack later, I got a 3400 out of a 03 grand am. New motor drops in great, mounts are good still, then when i'm hooking the fuel line back up the fpr cracks, call up GM, it's a special order and can't come until tomorrow morning http://www.605racing.com/Forums/images/smilies/rant.gif two days later and a couple more minor issues aside everything is back together and the last thing to do is stab in the axles, fill with fluids, and break the clutch in.......here it comes...... http://www.605racing.com/Forums/images/smilies/rant.gif ......passenger axle is a good 2 inches short, drivers is a good 2 inches long, motor is in a great position, 2 out of 4 stock motor mounts were used. Next morning, after 4 hours of searching and 2 or 3 12 packs l call up a couple local driveshaft shops, and the driveshaft shop, looks like $600 for shitty pieces together stock axles, or $1300 for 500hp level 3 customs from the driveshaft shop, so the alero with remain in denver for a month or two until the custom driveshaft shop axles are done.... http://www.605racing.com/Forums/images/smilies/rant.gif ........

On a side note, hp tuners has handled the 5 speed swap great so far and I anticipate no problems on that side, i got a set of almost brand new potenzas for my wheels for $150!! 255/40/17s in the front and 235/45/17s in the rear.

So all problems aside the alero runs again, after almost 3 years, which makes me very happy. And the new axles should be done in a month or two, and be ready for the boosted motor and fabrication of the supercharger setup!!! :yahoo:

that would ruin them IMO, rims with a colored lip are played out IMO, this is just a classic styled rim, 10yrs from now they will still look awesome, shit they are already 5 years old, been discontinued for over 2 years......

those are probably one of my favorite sets of rims... i wish i could find some used ones

thank you, but seriously........   .....good luck, i was fortunate to pick up a set when they were being discontinued (almost 2 years ago) and just 2 weeks ago after searching for almost a year, picked up two more as spares, they are not easy to come by for sure.....

but if you look you may get lucky, i hounded a guy on g35driver for awhile and never got a response, and then found the two I just bought on a 350zowners forum about a month ago, luckily he has just traded his z and sold them to me for a good price, they were mounted to some drag radials and only used once.....

if you do look, browse g35/g37/350z forums, that is the original fitment of these rims, 17x8 +32 offset......

my extra two rims, just arrived today!!! http://www.aleromod.com/forums/showthread.php?t=26717

I can do that easy. Ill post them in this thread. There are some ok ones in my cardomain. Any specific angles etc? When it is done we may have to get the two eerily similar looking cars together for some pics.

full side shot, up close shots from all angles of the hood, just post up a bunch and if I need anymore i'll let you know......

for sure, i'm up for a minnesota road trip!! or maybe we could meet in sioux falls for an SCCA event!!! that would be sweet!!

DIBS ON THE RIMS IF YOU EVER GET RID OF YOUR ALERO :)

since thats over with...... i thought your engine was all built up and shit? looks stock to me.

this one is stock....

plan has been all along:

1. swap in 5 speed with stock 3400
2. fab up boost routing
2. swap in built motor
3. add serious boost

if i went straight for the built motor/ with serious boost, tuning would be a nightmare, not to mention i would probably burn through 3 or 4 clutches

Late in the summer would be excellent to meet up at a dragway somewhere. Then you would have time to get it 100% and my schedule might calm down a bit. Its a little hectic between moving, a new career, and a wedding all in two months.

04-27-2009, 06:13 PM
Soo how much is this total 5 speed swap costing, if it was done right the first time?

kwhauck
04-27-2009, 10:07 PM
depends on what you want the car to hold when you are done. bare basics, assuming you can find good prices....

getrag 282 from junkyard - $300-$500
OEM clutch or cheaper stage 1 or 2 clutch -$200-$300
custom mounts - depends on metal and welding abilities

those are the major things and axles, i think if you search and use OEM parts from a junkyard and get decent prices like from above, it could be completed for less than $1000 easily,

but as I posted before, my getrag 282 is far from stock and cost much more than that, and my messups didn't cost me much money, maybe $100 in misc bolts, and $40 for the FPR, everything else was fine, and I needed custom axles eventually anyways....

anymore question feel free to ask!!

Cliff8928
04-28-2009, 12:36 AM
You could do a 5-speed swap for less money and less time if you used a 287 instead of a 282. However I don't know how much torque the 287 will handle over time with a built engine. It must be quite a bit because spy's seems to have lasted a while.

kwhauck
04-28-2009, 01:09 AM
if you have your shit ready to go, and 1 or 2 more friends that are also mechanically inclined this is an easy 6-8hr project..........if you have everything ready to go......

and cliff what about an f23 swap? wtf was the 287?

Cliff8928
04-28-2009, 01:21 AM
287 = F23 = M94

282 = Mg2

Do me a favor bro, send me a close-up of that driver's side trans mount that goes to the frame please. If what I think I'm seeing is correct, Im concerned about it's ability to handle a reasonable amount of boost. (after having snapped off several sets of mounts myself).

it is a NVT-550 (getrag 282) from a 94 cavalier with a hydraulic clutch, I am utilizing the 3.94 gearset from a an achieva scx that happened to have the gold mine gleason torsen LSD hidden inside of it...

xXManwhoreXx
05-13-2009, 04:22 PM
you got lucky and got an LSD! was that factory offered?

kwhauck
05-13-2009, 04:25 PM
only came factory on 11 cars, the c41 oldsmobile achieva, and then they were available from gm, but at approx. $2100 in the early 90s, let's just say there are not very many in existence.....

kwhauck
05-15-2009, 09:55 PM
no, it runs fine, but its not driveable because custom axles ain't cheap, $1300 for the performance ones I am gonna need.......and honestly it probably won't get done until next summer, Lindsey and I are looking at a house, and buying a house comes before the alero.....

I will post some more pics when I go to pick up the alero on saturday and then we will just kind of play it by ear. Don't count me out completely, because I have a couple ideas with stock axles up my sleeves that I will be working on once I actually have access to the car.......

Honestly, the only thing i hate about my alero is the fact that it is an automatic. I've done 5 speed swaps in the past (96 nissan maxima, 88 mustang GT) but i am not sure how to deal with the integrated tcu ecu (pcm) in a gm vehicle, as i am in a emission controlled area and still need to be able to pass emissions.

Cliff8928
05-24-2009, 10:56 PM
The PCM is one of the easiest parts of it.

AZFire316

Emissions regulations and certification. Also the probability of how many would actually sell in comparison to the auto.

AZFire316
05-26-2009, 11:50 PM
was GM afraid of MAKING money? I know i would have bought a 3400 5 speed over my auto anyday.

was GM afraid of MAKING money? I know i would have bought a 3400 5 speed over my auto anyday.

you would have, but the other 90 percent of people who bought aleros brand new wouldnt.

AZFire316
05-27-2009, 06:07 PM
perhaps, but it would have opened up another potential group of buyers, I.E. the people that bought v6 Mustangs/Camaros may have opted for this vehicle due to its lighter weight, better power to weight ratio.

kwhauck
08-17-2009, 10:27 PM
ok a little update here, what with buying a house and other stuff, the alero has been put on the back burner (again) but with the summer meet coming up, we were making a really big push to get the car driving. The drivers side axles is in and fits perfect. The donor car was an 86 fiero. Just last night while doing some more research i believe I found an axle for the passenger side that will work. It is an axle from a buick rendezvous.....lol.........anyways, it is ordered and will be here thurday so unfortunately the car won't be coming to the summer meet. I will probably test fit late next week. If everything fits i have a few other minor issues to clean up and hopefully the car should be driveable in 3-4 weeks...........

08-17-2009, 11:33 PM
i believe with knowing the right parts and getting deals it could be done for $1000 or less, but an easier swap for a milder motor would be the f23 swap,

for me lets see........(remember a bunch of this stuff is because of neglect and my car sitting for 3 years)

built tranny $2500
oem clutch (to start with) $400
clutchmaster race clutch (to put in with built motor) $600
aluminum flywheel (for built motor) $300
misc bolts $80
88 beretta gt jackshaft $40
86 fiero cv axleshaft $65
2005 rendezvous cv axleshaft $112
new battery and oil, filter $137
fuel to fill car back up $22
fuel line and other gm only parts $217
plugs, wires, themostart, lug nuts, power steering pump and pulley, tranny seal, serp. belt $300
FPR, another fuel connector $100
tires $328

08-17-2009, 11:45 PM
wow thats alot.. why does it require sooo much fab work?

kwhauck
08-17-2009, 11:48 PM
like i said, it could be done alot easier and cheaper with an f23 tranny, i have gone with the 282 because it should hold the power i am looking for. Also, a lot of the stuff on my list is performance orientated (not necessary for the normal person) and also a lot is from the car sitting for 3 years.......
