Based on sound alone, there's hardly any difference. COST-wise however, SLP is the way to go, not to mention the Borla is discontinued...

(I'm considering a custom mandrel-bent setup( local muffler shop ), with high-flow cat and single flowmaster delta series 40 as a cheaper alternative )

^^^Well.... 3.8L and 3.4L are gonna sound diffrent so.......

But SLP Owns. Its very low, and sounds great. NOT queit, yet not obnoxious

Flowmaster 40 seiries are also great mufflers to go with.

well, sorry to say this, but its all in the ears of the beholder.

I havn't met a person yet who didn't love the SLP.

Here is my take:

Borla sounds very mild at idle... isn't too loud untill you really get in the gas. IMO it is a great choice if you plan on getting headers b/c your car will be very loud with headers and other aftermarket exhausts.

SLP is the best blend of performance and sound. It is a lot cheaper than the Borla, has a louder idle sound, and a very beefy sound through the RPM band. What I love about mine is that there isn't any of that ricey backfire sound. Plus the pipes are all mandrel bent stainless steel, so you are getting very high quality parts. This is the best option if you don't get headers because if you do, it will be loud as all hell.

Flowmaster custom exhausts are good too. They're cheaper usually, and you can customize it with whatever tips you want. However, most shops do NOT do mandrel bending of their pipes, they do crush bending... which makes ripples and kinks in the pipes. This restricts air flow. The sound is very similar to the SLP, if not a bit louder when you mash the pedal. It's not as throaty as the SLP though. This is the best option if you are broke, as it sounds very good for the money.

Ur lookin at about $400 shipped....and its werth it.

yeah, it will fit all aleros. The thing is though since it is a dual exhaust, you'll need to "notch" the bumper cover on the passenger side to make it fit as high as the driver side :)

I can get people on the list on a commit now and pay later type setup
but you have to come through no backing out

I just recieved my Borla Exhaust from Summitt Racing today. I'll get it installed this weekend. The reason I went with Borla was because of some good reviews. I also did not want to cut my bumber and can't afford a good body kit.

how could you hate the SLP and like the flowmaster? They are very similar sounding. Makes me wonder if you have actually heard the slp on a 3400 in person.

bulldogpants

they sound nothin alike when u get on the gas. and the 40's idle alot deeper. ask jturkey.

makes me wonder if uve ever heard flowmaster 40's in person

Naich
06-23-2004, 01:24 PM
he's talking about 40's. Yes, I have heard them on both alero and grand am many times on many cars. the 80 is different, but the 40 and SLP are similar. The 80 is a LOT louder.

bulldogpants
06-23-2004, 01:37 PM
slp is nothing like a 40. heck the slp sounds like a lawnboy mower compared to a 40.

yes the 80 is louder than the 40..... but not buy much. 80 drones alot worse than a 40.

yea, ummm. thats my point. i was at ASS. there were plenty of different exhausts there. SLP and 40s arent alike, im not argueing. im stating a verified fact.

there were cars with slp, flowmaster 40, flowmaster 80, and magnaflow at the homecoming show in lansing this past weekend. so its been documented by my ears.

Naich

I'm not saying that they are identical, but they're similar. They fill the same sort of criteria. They are both definately louder than stock at idle and on the gas. They're both probably too loud to use if you plan on getting headers, and both around the same interior/exterior droning.

SLP uses better materials than 95% of the flowmaster setups that use crush bend piping and not stainless steel. The fact is that you're bashing on SLP, when they're all good systems. To claim one is better than another is kind of stupid, because there is no way to define what is better. The flowmaster 40's would fit in the same category as SLP. Personally, I'd go with the SLP because you can install it yourself and it is made of stainless steel. If you're not paying a shop to install it, you're paying about the same ammount as you would for a custom flowmaster 40 system.

But the best thing to do probably is to go out to a show to listen to the different types of exhausts, and see which one you like the best.

ya i said i hate slp......... after u stated u never met a person who didnt love slp.... well now u have.

i wasnt goin on about how slp sucks and it sounds like crap and it doesnt perform well...... its an excellent setup. its just that it sounds NOTHING like 40's.... which once again leads me to believe uve never heard a 40 on a 3400....... u can admitt if u havent...... i only know of one person who even has 40's on there car.

it all depends on what your going for
if you want a good sound and dont really care about performance, flowmaster is your muffler. they were designed by a sound engineer and are one of the worst flowing mufflers tested at uti when my friend went there. they flow 100-200 cfm less than their competitors with the same size muffler.
not to mention flowmaster doesnt make a system for out car so most likely your dealing with crush bent or custom bent pipe.

slp is a straight through design but still not one of the best flowing mufflers
but its pipe is mandrel bent which willout flow custom bent of the same size.
lets not also forget it carries a lifetime warranty and is stainless.
most exhaust shops warranty work for 2-3 years and used aluminized pipe.
aluminized pipe is heavier than stainless and also more prone to corrosion down the road.
all things to consider...

personally slp isint up to my standards either. I was using a hybrid slp with magnaflow mufflers but the pipe is 409 instead of 304 stainless. it also kinks about the rear axle a bit.

so next for me is all 304 mandrel bent, tig welded, with magnaflow mufflers.

I researched my local shop today after work, and as it turns out, the SLP will be cheaper than a flowmaster delta series 40 with a mandrel-bent ALUMINIZED pipe would be. Only question I'm asking myself NOW is: Do I really wanna wait so long for a new exhaust?

urgh. ;)

I've been to plenty of shows with plenty of GA's and Aleros with ALL KINDS of exhaust setups. I've seen probably 5 with the 40 series setup, only 1 with the 80's.... and magnaflows, and lots of other brands as well. Maybe the one I'm thinking of was magnaflows.

Anyway, there isn't really any reason to HATE SLP, even if you prefer flows.

i do like my slp, but when a two muff set-up is used, there isnt any of the raspy resonance, just deep mellow tones troughout the rpm band due not only to the flowmasters sound barriers, but your exhaust is flowing at a slower and leisurly pace so to speak compared to a slp (crossflow set-up)..using 2 muffs gives it a real mellow(dare i say it V8) sound to it without the ricey decel pops that mine has when im tached out and let off it......if i could do it over id go mandrel bend with 2 muffs

I have the 80 series Flowmaster w/magnaflow 2.5"highflow cat and the resonator removed, sounds nice, not too loud. I've had several ppl tell me it sounds like a V8, it's almost embarassing can't live up to it's bark, imo. Only heard one other Alero had a fart can on it don't know what engine he had (think he had a 4) but was total rice  didnt like it at all. Personally though i thnik all the above mentioned mufflers sound good...at least it's not stock
