fuel pump question from someone with no experience

im looking at a second alero with a v6, how hard is replaceing a fuel pump, how much is one and anyone ever have at done at a shop and remember how much

it's a bitch, if you are stuck in the ghetto, in the pooring rain, with the stock scissors jack, in a gravel parking lot.......

and in a proper shop it is still a pain in the butt,

if you do attempt it, or even pay someone to do it, make sure your gas tank is damn near empty, you back or the shop will thank you, a happy mechanic won't charge as much time for a job,

i would guesstimate a shop shoud charge 2-4 hours to change a fuel pump, stealership 3-8.....

its another alero im looking at, the person selling int is now in a wheel chiar due to cancer but it has a bad fuel pump so im certain im getting a good deal eventhoguh i cant test drive it but i may or may not get it, is there any common problems with the 3.4 to look out for at a 100k and how much is the pump

Last summer I replaced mine, autozone had the entire assembly for $150. But I didn't have the time to do it myself so I ended up paying $730 for a shop to do it but that's including part, labor, towing, and a couple other things that I can't remember.

I paid $500.

I know I could do it myself. It's pretty easy, if you have a lift.

Undo the bolts on the gas tank straps, drop the tank down, undo the bolts holding in the pump, and turn it to "unlock" it

Not the same car, but similar labor because you have to take the gas tank out, I've done 2 4th gen f-body camaro/firebird, one in the shop and one myself. The first was the firebird done at an out of town dealership because I was stranded and had no choice, $900. 2nd time was the camaro did myself in the driveway, took 2-3 hours.

There is a model of Mustang that you can just remove the back set and access the fuel pump that way. I forget if it's the brand new ones or the body before it

That's funny, every time I had to drop the tank, and that was 4 times within a year, I told myself I'd cut an access hole.. :lol:

But I never do. Maybe next time.

I had a 84 Honda that was like that, and Cactus is right, all cars should be like that.
