Driving home from work at 4 am this morning and I hit a dip in the road and then the car goes, RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!! and the power seemed to change a bit. I thought I dropped the tranny.
I pull over and go behind the car and look under it, I didn't see anything wrong, but when I stood up I noticed that both exhaust tips are touching the bumper. I look under the center of the car and the cat and intermeate (sp) pipe are NOT conected.
Car is so loud, I mean LOUD!! I think I'm going to wear ear plugs while driving until I get it fixed. The radio can't even drown it out. The entire car vibrates too.
I was told the cat is more than 1/2 gone and just to buy a replacement cat for my system. I did, and paid for express shipping. An extra $51 is better than a ticket.
I have the invoice from the shop stating the problem and the receipt for the new cat. Hoping to get it done on Friday:ninja:

But me, it was only a small 2.2L, and its the cat that was disconnected from the catback. I can just imagine how loud this must be

Ah yes...this also happened to me last year on the way to ASS. If you have a s/c and its not properly tuned for the car...just run open headers and the probelm goes away until the system is hooked back up. Loud as all hell, but sucks for gas mileage. My downpipe actually came loose and it took me an hour to find a shop to work on that part because I have aftermarket headers.

I had my flex pipe blow apart last Fall while running heavy throttle up hill and blow apart. It scared the crap out of my as I lost speed and power. Once I got somewhere to look I was relieved that was all it was. Patched it and replaced whole exhaust a few weeks later but scared to get on the gas until it was fixed. Just imagine how loud that would be at WOT at a drag strip, not something I would try.

I thought you didn't have to tune your engine for a cat-back exhaust?

you don't have to unless you want the maximum gains

Where do you tune your engine for something like that...didn't you say you do that Ion? What else does this apply to?
I had something like this happen to my Geo Tracker back in high school...embarassing to drive around like that...

That happened to me in my Camaro. Running true dual exhaust. Ran over something in the parking lot that I didn't see when pull out of a parking spot and it ripped open my exhaust on 1 side. My exhaust was loud enough as it was with the true duals, hollowed cats, and 3-chamber muffler. But with "open" exhaust on a 400+ hp race motor I'm surprised I didn't get nailed by every cop within a 5 town radius of my drive home.

I took a video of it, but it really didn't come out too good. I'll put it up.
I got the cat yesterday from S&S. $51 for 1 day shipping, but it's still cheaper than a $200 ticket.
I was quoted about $110 for the install. $70 to put it in and another $40 to set up EGT probe back up. Of course this is providing my O2 sensor isn't shot or the threads don't seperate. I'm going to a new shop now and they don't know about the O2 sim yet. Probably not a good idea to get the car inspected on Tuesday with the cat install :rolleyes2:
Guy at the shop : Well it depends on the threads on the O2 sensor, if they come apart or not. You may need a new one
Me : Yeah The O2 sensor
