View Full Version : I'm buying another 3400 engine!

so this guy is cleaning out his garage, and he's selling a 3400 that came out of a 2003 grand am GT. the only thing wrong with it is a blown head gasket! and he's selling it for 50-75 bucks, he just wants to get it out of the way. i'm thinking of cleaning it up and swapping in some parts, especially the UIM, since the 2003 one is going to be a lot better than my 1999. and then i'll have a bunch of parts for core parts :yahoo: but yeah, had to tell you guys... i'm excited :)

im excited for you. TURBO!

99alerogirl
03-03-2009, 03:57 PM
BAHA gotta find a job to fund that project first.

question.. do i need anything special to transport the engine back down to bloomington? i mean obviously i'll be driving the family's trailblazer to get it, but will i need to hook a trailer up or anything?

Bad99Olds
03-03-2009, 03:58 PM
well can u fit the engine in the trailblazer? lol

well can u fit the engine in the trailblazer? lol

haha i mean all the seats fold down, but i guess i've just never seen how big this engine is, and i don't know how fragile it is and if i can just throw it(not literally of course) in the back and go hahaha.

This could be good or bad..LOL

and yes, i realize this :ninja:

Bad99Olds
03-03-2009, 04:02 PM
well idk. someone who has seen the engine out could tell u.

thanks! i figured if anything that's even cheaper than core prices i would be charged for getting things ported and whatnot. because my car is my DD and i can't go without it for a week.

the guy just emailed me back, it has 90k on it :) a bit much for an 03, but still 27k less than mine!

Total miles doesn't matter if ur gutting and rebuilding new... The block isn't known to wear out unless something horrible happens. Congrats!! Now u have something to do!!

99alerogirl
03-03-2009, 04:10 PM
you're right! and it's 75 i guess. he had it listed for both prices, but 75 was his latest price. but to rent an engine hoist (he said he just got rid of his not too long ago) it costs 35 :( i'm hoping i can just bring some manpower to lift it haha. and yes, now i have something fun to do! hopefully i can get it into our big garage so it can be at least a little warmer..

time for all new internals and 250+ HP:dance1::popcorn:

CONGRATS on an amazing deal!:beerchug:

The transport issue..... if you have access to a trailer then use it. It will be a lot easier to load/unload. Just strap the engine down and your all good. One of my sisters used to have a trailblazer and i dont think it would be a problem to fit the 3400 in the back. just make sure if you put it in the back that its strapped down so it doesnt fall over and break shit. lol

haha yeah, now i just have to learn how to rebuild an engine, what's required to "beef up" the internals and such. i'm ready for some POWER. i should probably invest in a beater to get me through, just in case. haha.

to answer your question, yes if it's just the block and head you can probably fit it in the back of a TB. A hoist would make life much simpler, but a couple of guys could lift it. I just got rid of a 4.3 last year from my old Blazer and me and my wife's cousin moved it, but it was a bitch, of course, we slid it onto the back of a trailer and weren't trying to lift it up into the back of a TB either.

That being said, if I were you, I'd rent a trailer from Uhaul, all you need is small one and for less than $30 you will save a boat load of aggrivation trying to move this engine.

Beholder88
03-03-2009, 04:28 PM
Damn girl, that's a great find! Wish I could find a deal like that! That's the kind of thing you want to keep in one piece and re-build. Maybe do a 5-speed swap or something. I'm jealous...

99alerogirl
03-03-2009, 04:28 PM
well i have a trailer i can use, and the guy said he has enough people there to lift it no problem. the trailer i have sits no more than a foot and a half off the ground, it's a shorty haha.

now as far as getting it back home and settled. is there like... an engine stand thingy i'm gonna have to have? haha forgive me, i've never done this before. my dad has an SBC block sitting on a stand, so i'm thinking i'll need something similar?

Beholder88
03-03-2009, 04:31 PM
You could get an engine stand, or a wood pallet for temporary storage until you get one.

fielder87
03-03-2009, 04:32 PM
i'd get it to your dads...use his cherrypicker, and lower it onto blocks on the ground(outta the way),and then andmire, and star thinking..lol

I would venture to guess he has it on a crate or something already, and if not, and it's just sitting on the ground, f it and leave it sitting on the ground until you're ready to start rebuilding it

99alerogirl
03-03-2009, 04:34 PM
yeah i know i can't just lay it on the ground of the garage. i really have NO idea how big these things are. it may just have to sit covered on the trailer for a day so i can see it and THEN figure out where i can store it, and then admire it and start planning :)

Getting an engine bored means making the cylinders a larger diameter. So technically you could bore the engine and have a 3500 (or larger) instead.

Do you know if you are getting the engine AND tranny, or just the engine? If you're getting the tranny too, it's quite large, the engine itself isn't too horrible big. Also, it should fit OK in the back of a trailblazer. My sister in law has an Equinox which is pretty much the same thing, and it's got plenty of room.

TB will be larger actually, especially if it's the EXT

Possible, but as far as cargo space, it's almost identical.

03-03-2009, 04:39 PM
yeah it's an extended trailblazer, it has the 3rd row seats, so it's got TONS of room. and i don't know if i'm getting the tranny too, he said the engine, but who knows what all that entails.

ok so now that i know what "boring" is, i'm guessing that has to be done professionally.

Yeah, a machine shop would have to do that. You would have to tear the engine completely down to nothing but the block itself, and take that to the machine shop and tell them what bore you want. Then they more or less drill it out for you - very precisely.

If you're getting the tranny too, that's just a bonus. If you don't need it, you could probably sell it for a pretty penny on ebay, and use the money for that Turbo you've always wanted!

It's these ones:

The first one looks like the check engine light, and the second video is the ABS light. I'm not entirely sure what the red one is on the first video, I'm not too familiar with the GA dash.

Does the GA have traction control the our Aleros? I know that if you turn it off it will redline like that if you floor it and will not shift right away. If the traction is on it keeps the engine from revving too high, and will shift earlier.

Interesting...... im not sure if they have traction control though.

I barely floor my car cause everytime i do i always cringe....thinking about what its doing to my tranny:ninja: I try not to beat on the car too much since its all i got right now and i love ruby too much;) once its built for speed...that will change:lol:

The motor is not that big; you can fit it inside the Trailblazer just fine.
Is is a bit heavy though, especially considering the cast-iron block. About 400lbs. fully dressed.
You'll need some wood blocks to sit it on, and obviously a tarp or something so you don't leak any oil/other fluids and run the Trailblazer. I'd highly suggest an engine stand if you are planning on disassembling the motor.

This gives you an idea of the size (the accessories are missing, of course - alternator, power steering pump, AC compressor, and a few idler pulleys):

And here's an old one just sitting on a couple of wood blocks on the garage floor:

just label stuff, take pictures, and tear into it!!!

if it's a complete, usually you take the accessories, wiring harness, exhaust manifolds, stuff like that off first, and then the UIM, LIM, and heads, pretty easy stuff, just take your time if it's your first motor and label stuff, you will be fun, taking motors apart and putting them back together is so much fun!!!:yahoo:

I welcome the opportunity myself, working on engines is a very good skill to have. My dad could do that stuf and was never trained on how to do it. I just enough to figure what may be wrong mechanically, and electrically its pretty easy, but tearing it down and putting it back together again is something I have to do! All and all good luck either way you go.

"big thing that came off after the LIM"

i don't even know if those are accurate, but i can totally see those being my labels :) ya'll will see me on here every 5 mintues with a picture saying "what's this called?" haha. be ready.

alright, took a picture of it real quick earlier today. it's really dirty, especially for 90K miles (mine has 117K and doesn't even look that dirty. then again, mine doesn't have a blown head gasket). I took the valve cover off, just cause I had never seen the valves or whatever before, and the bolts were already loose enough I just took them off. it's dirty but it's gonna be fun to clean up :). i also noticed that the LIM is stamped "00," which i think means it's a 2000 LIM? but the guy did say he's now on his third engine in the grand am, so it's possible this wasn't the original 2003 engine. but here you go, here's my new project :)

Yup, that's a 2000 model. Same as what I'm working on right now! I would put the valve cover back on if I were you, just to keep dirt and whatnot out of there until you can tear into it. Damn, polish up that UIM!

haha yeah I put the valve cover back on, I just wanted to see it. so I guess this was the guys second engine. as long as it's not a 99 engine I'm fine with that! and yes, first thing to do is to clean the UIM haha, since that will be going on soon. anyone know any issues I'm going to have putting the 2000 UIM on the 1999 LIM? I heard something about the EGR being mounted different or somehting. or I might have to change both manifolds at the same time.

Hmmmm, not sure about the EGR, but looks like you got the EGR with that motor, so as ling as the wires connect up right you might be OK.

yeah, i heard something about how they're mounted horizontally on 99's and vertically after that, but they should work either way.

As long as the EGR on that motor you got still works, you might as well use it. Looks like you got a few other sensors as well, the MAP sensor is there, all the injectors, probably the knock sensor and the collant temp sensor on the thermostat housing. You're set.

if you are doing a build just delete the EGR, it's not worth keeping around....

yeah, and we don't have emissions anyways. does deleting it have any benefit?

Any chance you'll wind up with a spare power steering pump? If so, I could really use it. Mine doesn't like me anymore. Sounds like my ex-wife, always whining!!

Check out my thread for my LIMG project. I've got pictures of the UIM and the throttle body right after I took them off. The insides are black as tar. That's from the EGR. Exhaust Gas Recirculation. The valve lets exhaust gasses back in through the intake, causing carbon build-up on everything it touches. Dumb invention...

haha I needed the power steering pump too, but no I didn't get it :(

You had some worried leg humpers in here! They thought the guy may have taken you! Now you have something to do every day.

Lifting the entire engine assembly with those weak ass 10 mm middle intake bolts threaded into aluminum seems like a horrible idea.

i got bored and started disassembling today, even though it was still outside on the trailer! ha, i got impatient. anyways, i took off the TB, UIM, some random hoses and lines, the thermostat housing, the thermostat, and started taking off the LIM. this engine is DIRTY. i have pictures, but i'm far too lazy to mess with it all right now. i broke a socket adapter though :( and cut open my thumb, but hey, it was fun!

Nice, make sure you keep everything you take off. The easy part is taking it apart, the hard part is putting it all back together!

NEVER lift the engine by anything except the two large black steel lifting brackets!!! One is bolted to the front cylinder head and the other is sandwiched between the timing cover and the alternator.
I did not lift it by the LIM bolts......I'm not quite that clueless.:rolleyes2:
