Just the upper. What do I need? How hard/easy is it? I know I need gaskets and a TB gasket

I would like to do the lower too, but I'm going to leave it alone.

I know there are vacuum lines, but are there any coolant lines? I don't see any

it's easy as....pie? i don't have an engine bay to look at but i seem to remember 8 bolts (10mm is a guess). also have to remove the MAP sensor and coil packs. might as well upgrade to the phenolic spacers if ben has some in stock. never have to buy another UIM gasket because it has o-rings! the coolant line runs to the front of the LIM, IIRC.

Are the spacers worth it?

I just removed my UIM and its on teh new 3500....guess what I was extremely happy to find. I metal and rubber gasket. Amazing...its like the listened somewhat.

Spacer makes an unoticeable power increase but pays for itself if you have to remove the uim more than twice more cause you will never need another uim gasket. UIM is def pie. Only things were listed by Jackal aside from the brake booster line on the top left.

It that what that vacuum line is for? :coolio:

Do I have to take off the coil pack

Yes coil pack needs to come off as well as the map sensor.

shouldnt take you more than 1 hour to do, and thats milking it.

/\ That includes time for 3 beers.

I believe Matt Fuller has the spacers, or something else. But whatever it is it keeps his upper intake cool to the touch.

Those are the phoenelic spacers Jackal talked about. I have a set. They are a handy piece. I am very happy with mine. You just can't expect a butt dyno result out of them.

Ok, thats what I thought they were. I don't expect miracles but they are the way to go if you plan on pushing your car (IMHO...I plan on going this route in the future)

The spacers are no longer made due to both a lack of demand and the ever increasing costs of phenolic material. There is a set on 60degreev6.com for 60 shipped so if you want them, jump on it.

They are worth it for anyone who is interested. Rowdy I would get on these now if I were you.

I thought we had mass air flow sensors not air pressure, maybe it was a misstype I may be wrong.

3400s have both MAF (mass air flow) and MAP (manifold absolute pressure) sensors.
The MAF is installed inline with the air intake, while the MAP attaches to a bracket at the rear of the plenum (next to the coil packs).

phenolic material?

how is that different from anything else? (e.g standard gasket material)

Its not metal or cardboard. Its compressed wood and resin. Paper gaskets aren't thick enough to block heat transfer, and metal transfers heat very well.

if you have coolant lines attatched to your tb your going to have to drain your entire coolant system

alerored04
02-14-2009, 07:11 PM
/\ Untrue. I always just pull it off and let whatever leaks out go and then refill. It is usually much less than a quart.

well i guess if you dont care about making a mess in your driveway, then i suppose that works....

so like whenever you drain your oil do you do the same thing lol?

alerored04

Oil goes in a pan the same as coolant does, Im just saying that there is not reason to drain the whole system.

Well my friends supra doesn't have a MAF it only has a MAP.

So a car can determine the amount of air its getting (like a maf) based on the #'s of boost the MAP is picking up? amirite?

And I'm thinking someone should post a walkthrough of taking the UIM off cause as easy as it sounds I'm sure I will do something wrong.

i am sure your friends supra has a 3-bar map sensor, ours is only a 2-bar and therefore a maf is also required. the how to should be covered in the LIMG repair how to which is somewhere around here...
