Emergency brake shoes

Good God man, I just priced e-brake shoes at AutoZone, $76 for the set!!!! They have a lifetime warranty, so technically I wouldn't ever have to buy them again, but damn! These things are half the size of a normal brake shoe, and still they cost so much? Anyone know where I could get some for cheaper, without having to sacrifice quality? I need to do brakes all the way around, rotors and pads and e-brake shoes. I was thinking about going drilled and slotted, but I don't have the money at the moment. Do the e-brakes on these have a spring kit like your average drum brakes? I couldn't find one at AutoZone.

Why do you need to replace the ebrake shoes? Do you drive with the ebrake on often? I have 246k miles on my original ebrake shoes and they are fine.

Well, the damn things have been bad since I got the car. I can pull the e-brake going 10MPH and nothing happens. I've checked my cables and everthing is tight. I haven't had the time to actually take the rear rotors off and get a good look, but I can hear them grinding when I pull the lever, it's just that nothing happens. And no, I don't drive with the e-brake on - :eek:

you need to actually adjust the ebrake by taking off your rear wheels, i have the same problem i just never got around to tightening it up

I might need to look into that. Do you know how it's supposed to be done? Everywhere I look, they tell you to open up your center console and adjust the cable there.

1. Fully apply and release the parking brake (1) 4 to 6 times in order to self adjust the brake.
2. The parking brake (1) is self adjusting, however, if the parking brake tension is in question, refer to Park Brake Lever Replacement.

is that just for alero's? because my boyfriend is having the same problem on his sebring.

Actually, I just tried that on my lunch break. I pulled it and released it several times, and nothing changed. I'll have to take the wheels off and check everything over. I don't see replacing the lever as a 100% fix, there's got to be another way. I'll just have to go over everything when I get a chance. Are the parking brakes adjustable at the wheel as well? Like said above, they are self adjusting. Unless both self adjusters are busted, then I'm probably screwed.

The disc brake e-brake shoes are closer to $100.

I bought them for Makkro about a year ago and sent them over to him. It was actually cheaper that way for him

Theres a star wheel you can move to adjust the ebrake shoes after you remove the rotor and caliper.

If it's as crappy of a design as most other GM E-Brakes I've worked on.. have fun :]

They're not shoes.. it's a horseshoe-ring that you need to pry apart to slip over then man-handle onto the mounting points... and they can be held on there pretty poorly. A Silverado I was working on had the retaining clips completely rusted off, and the ring kep hooking up on the ebrake surface.. needed new clips.. but the new ones were redesigned and MUCH better.

Guess you won't really know what's wrong until you pull it off.. chances are you'll be able to just adjust the thing Richie mention, or wanna get a parts kit to replace the clips and adjuster wheels.. they're reletively cheap

Ya, mine is shot too. It barely hold the car when the ebrake handle is all the way up. But I have a manual, so I guess it got used more often. "Ding ding ding ding ding ding!!!" :lol:

I checked out rockauto.com yesterday, and found a bunch of stuff that I need. The brake "shoe" is $44, and the clip and spring kit is on $17. I need to get the LIMG kit too, it's $67 on there as opposed to $85 at AutoZone. The only thing I'm not going to get from there is the rotors and brake pads. Anyone know a good place to go for drilled and slotted rotors? Rockauto only has them for the rear.... don't know why.

Ebrake = red brick jammed in front tire...You can pick which side you want to apply it to...LOL

I never use the e brake...maybe I should check to see if it works...LOL

ok sooo i installed a new ebrake lever but i have a lot and i mean alot of slack in the cable,I took the wheels off and removed the e-brake shoes, and seen that hmmmm thing that looks like a bolt in a sleeve with a screw, its the thing that sits between the open gap of the shoes, is that how you get the slack out of the cable ? and if so just exactly how do you do it,and if not what do i need to do ?

Just use the star wheel adjuster, sometimes covered in brake dust. A time-consuming process, guess and check, but it works. Have fun.

So I'll be getting my R1Concepts drilled and slotted rotors on Friday. I figured out that you have to remove the rear hub in order to get the e-brake shoe off. I took the rotors off and there is still a good bit of material left on the shoes, so I'm going to try adjusting the cables when I do my brakes. Car's completely broke down at the moment, starter finally died. I've got that coming in on Thrusday. Will post pics.

You don't HAVE to remove the hub. The horse-shoe can be flexed outward enough to get it off, but you won't be doing it by hand probably.
