so when i bought the car the gas gauge would start to go haywire after it reached about an eighth of tank left... now it almost always goes crazy (reading full, then going to empty with the gas light to back up to a quarter tank) so i was wondering what i can do to get an accurate reading at all levels of gas... like is there just a sensor or is it more complicated than that??

it is just a sensor but its complicated as well. the sensor is inside the fuel tank with the fuel pump and the only way to change it is to remove your gas tank. its a major pain. first, try running some fuel injector cleaner. sometimes that will help free up a sticking float.

Yes, the sending unit, easiest to just replace the whole fuel pump when buying used.
^Well, not at all easy, but doable.
