well yesterday when i was driving home from work i looked in my mirror and thought i saw smoke coming out of the back of my car but then i didn't see it anymore so i thought i was just going crazy. then a little while later i could smell oil burning then it went away. as i pulled onto my street my oil light flashed then went off. i pulled into my driveway and got out to look around for oil leaking but didn't see anything and i heard a loud ticking noise coming from my engine. i shut it off and checked the oil which was extremely low. that's not normal because i check my oil at least once a week always making sure my oil is full. so i filled it back up with oil and started it again to see if i could see where it was leaking. the loud ticking went away but there is still a little tick and i looked under the car and saw the oil pouring out. it looks like its coming from somewhere way up on the side of the oil pan. what could this be? any help would be great.
When is the last time you changed it? WHo did it?
Could be as simple as the oil leaking from the drain bolt and flying back onto the hot exhaust or it could be a leak inside the case making you burn oil internally (Not Good)

i just changed it like 3 weeks ago and i do it all myself. its not coming from the drain hole. the oil is pouring out from somewhere up on the side of the oil pan. its on the side where the tranny connect to the engine and the oil only pours out when the engine is running. when its off i dont see any oil leaking out.

oil pan gasket

thanks for the ideas guys. me and my uncle were just checkin it out and found the problem. the oil pressure sensor is busted and the oil was coming out of there and streaming down the side of the engine to where i saw it coming out under the car. so tomorrow i can go get a new sensor fix it and get rid of my bosses minivan i have been driving which i hate.

it's an oil level sensor actually, lol that's an easy fix too it's right between the cam housings
good to hear you figured it out

is that the only sensor or is there more than one? because when i looked it up on the autozone website and advance auto parts they call it a oil pressure sensor/switch. and is this the same sensor i would hook up to for a oil pressure gauge?

it senses level as far as i know, that's what triggers the low oil light, and yeah that's the one you use for the oil pressure gauge, you need some sort of adapter and shit
edit: hmm yeah on autozone it shows up as an Oil Pressure Switch, PS152, $9.99. guess it is a pressure sensor.

The oil pressure sensor is under the IDI cover, driver side of the car, on the intake cam tower. If it's not coming from there, it's not an oil pressure sensor. If it is coming from there, it's the pressure sensor and not an oil level sensor.
The place to hook up an oil pressure gauge would be T'd off the stock oil pressure sensor.

ya that is where it is. i got the new one and have it half fixed. i got the old one out and got the new one in last night then quit because it was dark and really cold and i couldn't feel my fingers anymore. all i have left to do is clean u all the oil and put it all back together.

valve cover gasket
oil pressure sensor
rear main seal
In order of what you should be praying for.

Glad you got it fixed and an easy fix at that!!
Even if it was the pan, unless it was on the bottom of the pan, oil wouldn't pour out unless the engine is on. There is zero oil pressure when the motor is off.
Since it was mentioned, rear main seal is a PIA. It's between the tranny and engine

its a pressure sensor ion, but technically it is a level sender, the unit uses the oil pressure to determine if you're low on oil. Pressure drops too low, too little oil in the system. kinda cool methinks :)

There is no level sensor on the 2.4 unlike on the 3400. Oil pressure is not a way to check if you're low on oil.

Unless you run out
And the sad part is thats not a joke, the 2.4 DOES use oil pressure to determine if you are low, read up on how any oil pressure gauge works, the lower the pressure, the lower your oil.
And cactus, the sad part is the stock one only tells you if its below 10% oil...which is why running a pressure gauge yourself is the only good way to moniter oil level....

Its not a way for you to check, its a way for the car's comp to check because people are lazy, cars are built on that assumption. Y do you think oil changes are recommended retartedly early? because people are lazy and will wait 1000 miles anyway, and by then it WILL be the RIGHT time to do an oil change.
We, as logical modders, check once a week with a dipstick, right?!

Giggity!!!
I gotta admit.... I rarely check mine, unless something leads me to think something is wrong. If I'm under the hood for any reason I'll check, but I don't check on a whim.
