So i could not find a thread on this =[

2.2 is a good platform to build upon. lots of mods available. (the gm build book takes it all the way up to 1400+hp.)
the v6 doesn't. there's some type of prob with the LIMG that they all have, whatever that is.
i dun know too much about the 2.4, but you should ask ion, his car is sick!

I would go with a 2.2 ecotec with a manual
The ecotec is very fuel efficient, fun to drive, manual transmission, there are a lot of reasonably priced aftermarket parts for it, and it only comes in the newer models, so you can probably find one with low miles and no issues with high mileage cars like rust, etc.

3400 needs the metal LIM gasket. There is plenty you can do to a 3400 but you won't find one with a manual trans from the factory.

If you want the V6, be prepared to replace the LIMG. Once that is done, you can do pretty much anything to that engine, just takes a little more ca$h.

Drive them all before buying.
My Opinion - I have owned most combos:
Most 3400s have quite a bit of power. Could be quite fun if you get a nice one. Gas mileage may be 17-18 in winter driving, short trips. Some 3400s seem to have less ( I had one with 11k on it and it was pretty slow)
Do NOT buy a 2.4L unless you have a no-questions lifetime warranty. Most mechanics would agree - there are many problems.
2.2L AT -Mine squealed tires easily, but lacked 30-40 mph power unless punched. I was satisfied with mine, but with 5 people in the car, it definitely wasn't quick.
2.2L Stick - good power, but it is a stiffer shifting stick - not a beater like my fun-to-drive saturn
Aleros in general - window regs, wheel bearings
2-doors have 1-star side impact ratings!!! 4 doors I think 3 stars.
I will add more later.

2.4L engines don't have many problems. lol my 2.4 has 84k on it and every time it broke down was not because of the engine.
-fuel pump shorted out
-stuff around the wheels breaking (studs, hubs, etc)
the engine can take a lot of shit, it's the rest of the car that's weak. lol IMO, if you do get another Alero, 2.4 with a stick. That's the most durable combination there is on the Alero. Also, while it is difficult to find aftermarket support for the 2.4, it probably has the most parts (arguably). I've yet to hear of anyone doing "everything" to their engine that they possibly could.

Albino, its not true that the 2.4 is the most reliable engine available on the Alero, the ecotec is. Also, the ecotec has a more extensive aftermarket.
Indeed 2 doors Alero had a 1 star on the sides :
2 door coupe:
Front driver 4
Front passenger 5
Side driver and passenger 1
rear occupants 4
4 doors sedan:
Front driver 4
Front passenger 4
Front and rear Sides : 3

Wonder why the side is so bad??? I was hit on the passenger side, I thought it held up well.... Odd

Some 2.4Ls are great - I had one with 199k on it, running strong when I sold it.
Most mechanics will tell you to avoid them at all costs - I have had several tell me that.

Same for me. I'll cross my fingers, but mine is still doing good, but I did have to change my water pump, and I have a leaky camshaft tower gasket.
But those mecanics probly think about how many of these they swapped on 2.4Ls:
-Water pumps (mainly because it is a PITA to swap)
-Crank bearings (well duh, digging thru the whole engine)
-Gaskets
And a bunch of other wierd ass problems not related to mecanical parts on the engine, but affects the whole thing like IAT, IAC, TPS, Knock sensor, bad oil pressure sensor, weird vaccum leaks, etc... Those are fairly easy things to pinpoint when you know a bit about engines, but for Mr. and Mrs Everybody, it means taking the car at the dealer and having to pay 95 $ /hour of labor only to find the problem.
My 2 cents

Why are you sold on the 2.4L?
The 2.2L Ecotec is:
-considerably more fuel efficient
-very much more reliable (many describe it as bullet-proof) while the 2.4L has many known problems
-less power but still sufficient, especially with a stick
-many more aftermarket mods for it, not as many for the 2.4L
-cheaper to replace ( A 50k mile 2.4L at a wrecker is $1000 at least, a 50k 2.2L is $500 or less probably)
