I decided to PM the owner of Speed Industry (http://www.speedindustry.biz) (who's building my engine) to see what the status is with my engine and when the hell it goes in so I can get to the track before it closes.

His wife just had a baby last week, few issues with that, but still.

Hey Jan, what's goin on.

I figured out wtf was up with my car. Loose intake manifold bolts, LOL. Had a boost/vacuum leak. Torqued them properly, purrs like a kitten. Tuned idle and low RPM VE tables, runs oh so smooth. Was the one area I didn't spray with carb cleaner, 'til yesterday.

Anyways, so what's the word on the built engine? Milan's done as of last Saturday; was hoping I could get there in time, but oh well. Lapeer's open this weekend and next weekend as their final test and tunes. Really hoping to get to the track this weekend. I need a day or so to put whatever 500-750 miles on and do the oil changes and such before getting to the track (if it doesn't snow... -_- I hate snow). I must get to the track http://www.xceedspeed.com/forums/images/smilies/willy_nilly.gif

I haz your money for the assembly... http://www.xceedspeed.com/forums/images/smilies/icon2.gif Can drop off the car anytime.

BTW, congrats on the baby http://www.xceedspeed.com/forums/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif, hope all is well, heard there were some issues but not sure what

Glad you solved your problem. Obviously not related to the exhaust work that was done.

I'm way behind.. the baby set me behind even more. I may be able to have the motor done by this weekend, but there's no way in hell you'll have a running car by then.

I have a proposition for you.. You may like this. Since you've been so patient, I'll give you some free dyno time and you can run the 1/4 mile on my dyno. It has a light tree and everything. It's accurate to a tenth or so. That way you can get a nice base line and go to the strip in the spring.

Dyno time would be great, I'd love to see what whp I make. As for dyno drag racing, it isn't something I'm really interested in. I need the real track, really want to get a video of my burnout and whining down the quarter. Many people awaiting this moment on the forums, and of course, me. I'm pumped, or I was.

If the car was ready to go to Lapeer by next weekend it would be absolutely amazing. I know you guys've been pushed behind, but the engine's been there since mid-September, and we targeted late October for completion, me hoping it'd be done sooner. Bottom end was nearly done around then, and mid-October the little parts arrived to close up the bottom end and put on the head. 'Tis mid-November, and it's cutting pretty close now. I would be highly disappointed to not be able to get one run in this year; it's been over a year since the last time I've been to the track.

I thought you put your main man on the engine build that Friday two weeks ago solidly to get it finished? A fellow Alero owner and a friend recently (at the same time I dropped mine off) pulled their engine, built it, and reinstalled it within a weekend, which had me figure SI'd be able to breeze through it (I know other projects exist and have varying priorities, along with your limited workforce, but still)

I dunno, I'm just really hoping to be able to get back to the track once this year. http://www.xceedspeed.com/forums/images/smilies/icon_confused.gif

And so there we stand. Needless to say I am highly disappointed.

Speed Industry knows their shit though and are normally quick. My friend was without a car for a month while Monkey Wrench Racing half-assed a turbo setup for him with poor service.

SI is installing my Tenzos and Takata harnesses sometime.

damn, that sucks! BUT look on the bright side, u get free dynos and a dyno 1/4 mile........thats better than nothing! granted it took them way too long to get this finished....but in the end your gonna have a nicely built motor/fast alero :)

For laughs, this is what TheEdgeOfSanity just said after I told him how I fixed my car:
wut was the point of fixing it then if you are going to take it apart in a week?

TheEdgeofSanity
11-18-2008, 09:01 PM
lol, seriously. whats so funny about that statement? its not like your keeping your existing engine for anything so why fix it to get it swapped out. if i knew i had a new engine coming in a week, i'd pour sand in my 3400 and watch it blow!

[ion] C2
11-18-2008, 09:20 PM
The engine mechanical will be mostly new, but you still retain the:
- intake manifold and bolts
- supercharger
- throttle body
- all electronics
- header
- all exhaust
- all pulleys
- intake
- ignition
- all vacuum lines and components
- etc.

If the issue resided in something not engine-internal related, the problem would not be solved. I do NOT want a problem to "solve itself." I wouldn't want a brand new engine and a problem not seem to occur, and then wonder what exactly caused it.. and wonder if it could happen again.

It would've went away after the swap, but I wouldn't've known why...

And there's the fact that a boost/vacuum leak is BAD. I'd rather not get shitty fuel economy, an unmetered air flowing in and out causing rich and lean conditions and fucking up my engine's driveability, as well as reduced performance and an innaccurate tune. The rough unbearable idle also was highly annoying, and to see the exhaust piping shake like that made me think the welds would break.

I like a perfectly running car better than a shitload of symptoms that don't make sense.

and from all aspects thats totally true !

Speaking from a mechanic's point of view.. most of the external parts will be transferred
and we didn't want a repeat of issues or oddly fixing itself

and it was just as simple as tightening a few bolts so why not fix it

i wanna know why the hell you are having them install racing seats and harnesses for you.......can't do it yourself? Are they installing your motor as well?

[ion] C2
11-18-2008, 09:51 PM
They are installing my new engine, for free.

And I get free dyno runs.

Speed Industry's installed Takata harnesses before. I work at Takata... installing it correctly is important and I don't have air tools to remove the existing bolts. I also lack the fabrication skills SI has when it comes to making brackets and shit, the proper way. Plus, it's cold outside, and I'm lazy.

air tools arent required to remove the bolts holding the seat belts/seats in. They arent that hard to take off!

Screw that, don't worry about anyone on forums waiting for your engine to be done. I know you're excited and want it done ASAP, but let the guy take his time to build it the right way, then take your dyno time and get the engine running perfectly and go put some miles on it. It would suck to drop all that money into a properly built engine, just to have something fail because you were in a hurry to make the last track day of the season.

[ion] C2

That was just a further leverage point I tried to make, I don't care that other people anticipate this. I want it done. Engine was dropped off mid to late September in order to have plenty of time to get to many track days. There's no reason they can't properly finish the assembly and install it within a week.

i know it sucks to wait, but bothering them isnt gonna make it better.

i dropped my rear end off to be narrowed in august, and i just got it back about 3 weeks ago. waiting sucked, but i didnt need it right away and he did a good job at a damn good price so i couldnt complain too much.

Just got back from tuning. Did the High RPM VE tables which required some WOT and near WOT runs. SHIT! This thing pulls hard as hell now.

It now hangs between 11.3 - 11.8 AFR under power enrichment near WOT. I boost a solid 9.2 PSI as well.

Damn! This thing is a rush to drive now. Been a long time since I just layed into it... I tuned the low RPM VE and the idle VE the other day. The actual AFR stays very close to the commanded AFR now.

Ya I get 3.5 MPG at wide open throttle lol, I can get up to like 44MPG if I cruised at 55 MPH though. Normally I get 30 city.

It seems that now we are down to serious business.

No problem, I retract the dyno offer.

Now I need some info on the cams, which is intake, which is exhaust. I don't have any documentation for the cams you brought in.

The one with the hex drive for the power steering pump is the intake camshaft. I'll look up more information on determining that but I know that much off-hand.

Thanks Jan.

Hm, that's not good. He reverted his site back to the original one (not the one I made that we agreed for free installation on) last night, the time he sent me the latest PM above.

11-20-2008, 12:44 PM
uh oh, thats bad news....
i think you may have upset him, as he offered you something when he is stretched for time and you turned him down.
I know you need the real track, but everyone can wait, i think you need to just take what you can get here and call it a day.
PM him back and apoligize and conceed that you will take his option he provided you with, i think thats the best way to go...
it will preserve future business with him too, he will more speedily do any projects for you in the future...
this may hurt your ability to use him as an automotive expert....just saying

Understand this engine's been with him since mid-September. 2 guys pulled, built, and reinstalled their LD9 in a weekend.

I'm going down there in person after work to see what's up. If he's like spazzin out busy and stuff I'll just tell him don't worry about it and race in the spring. Free installation is IMPORTANT. I spent 12 hours making their website for him. He doesn't seem like the kind of guy to pull down my work and put up his old version of the site and nix the free install because I feel like my engine should be done within 2 months of dropping it off...

billytheman1188
11-20-2008, 02:29 PM
hmmm.....yea go stop by and talk to him. This sounds a littly iffy...

[ion] C2
11-20-2008, 02:47 PM
He was super excited about the website I made him, and guaranteed it would be worth my while.

It doesn't seem like he'd do something like this.. unless somehow his site got killed and had to use a backup. But some of my stuff still exists (the stuff that didn't have the same filename as the old files are still there).

It's 90% likely it's going to snow next weekend where the track is so I might as well have taken his offer. Should've. I'm just really eager to get to the track.

No offence but for the ways things are going, it seems like you are going to have nothing but future problems with them ahead of you.

[ion] C2
11-20-2008, 06:58 PM
It's all good. I went down there and talked to him. They're focusing on my engine, said it still will be done by this weekend, granted we don't need any odd bolts. I told 'em no rush, it's gonna snow anyway next weekend. Still insists it'll be done and installed ASAP.

The site went back to the old one because he wanted to update something and didn't do it right so had to upload the old version. I told him I'd update anything he needs, I'ma show him how to as well next time I'm there.
