I need an engine for my alero. I was wondering what years will fit it and where is the best place to get one for a reasonable price. I have a '03 GL1 with the 3400. thanks

01+ 3400 from GA, Impala, GP, Monte Carlo, Malibu (might be 3100), Montana van, Chevy version of the montana, etc. And no I am not stupid, some of the W body cars did come with 3400's. You need 01+ cause of the updated EGR valve. I you swapped you UIM over from your current engine you could use a 99+.

If you use one from the Montana, it has more HP and torque.

Never heard of the that. 99 - 05 models used the same power rated engines as ours. Bumped it up to the 3.5 after 05

Nope, I definitely recall it having more. Wikipedia doesn't mention it.

Teflone on here had his engine swapped with one from a Montana and went 0-100 in 14 seconds.

this is the spec ION is talking about:

Horsepower (hp / kw @ rpm)185 / 134 @ 5200

Torque (lb-ft / Nm @ rpm)210 / 278 @ 4000

I always wondered if the difference is cause for a slightly better spec engine wise, or just difference tune in the pcm from factory.

Yep, the Montana has 15 more horsepower and 10 more ft-lbs of torque.

depends if you are talking about the OHV 3.4 or the DOHC 3.4

LA1, same engine, more power for whatever reason.

that makes absolutely 0 sense. SOMETHING MUST be different. its a machine, you can't have two identical machines, and one runs that much better then the other

yes it does... it's the same engine, but with either a bigger bore/stroke, different TB, whatever, something, but it's still an LA1

well then it should have a different designation. the model itself is LA1, but it should have a separate name. thats like saying me and lance armstrong are both humans. its such a general sweeping statement, comparatively its useless.

Could be because the curb weight on a GL Alero sedan is 3008 lbs and the Montana comes in at 3730 lbs for the shorter wheel base and 3942 lbs for the long wheel base.

I think I remember reading a few years ago that they had diffeent exhaust manifolds and thats why they had slightly more power. I could be wrong though.

Ummm...

DOHC is dual over head cam.

I had one in my 95 Monte Z34. It was a 3400 DOHC

That thing had nuts...

But the DOHC feature is somewhat complicated and theres a lot that can and does go wrong... My pulleys made a lot of racket before the car got hit/totalled.

The Montana is not a DOHC motor though. It is a LA1 3400.

can the 3400 from the montana be fitted in the alero with no mods??What about the EGR valve?

All 3400 EGRs are electrically interchangeable.
