front liscense frame

i need a new frame in the front. is this possible to replace without taking bumper cover off? body shop said its in with rivets which im assuming means you have to take the cover off to change out? anyone ever try without taking it off?

when you get the new one, BREAK the old one off and cut the rivets with bolt cutters (or whatever will work for you) and then put the new one on with license plate screws.

tank the licence plate off. its little aluminum studs holding the holder to the bumber, should be all there is so its impossible to mistake. if you can break the hlder off without breaking the bumper, do it the way stated. but if not get a drill bit about a size or two smaller than the rivet and drill through it then it should break easily.

look at the inside of the button on your jeans...THAT is a rivet.

drill into the "center" witha drill the same size as the "hole" it will disconnect and not damage anyhting around it

You screw them into the holes. The screws have to be wider than the hole for it to catch the plastic. Fascinating, eh?

or you can use those little plastic pushpins that expand a piece when you push the center in..

im thinkin there must be sumthin behind the bumper cover that broke off when i drilled out the rivets cuz i got two screws in and the other two go right to the actual metal bumper im gunna have to get some long self tappers.

Dude, don't screw your license plate holder into the frame. Just find the right screws for the bumper cover, or if you messed up the bumper cover than find screws that will fit.

Mine is screwed into the bumper cover. If you are getting to the metal bumper, than you are doing it wrong or hitting the leftover rivet pieces.

seriously...there is such a thing as "license plate screws" they are actually wood-boring screws, however, they are short and just wide enough to pass through the holes on the license plate. these will be perfect for what you're doing. So get your butt to the auto parts store and spend $2 to get the right stuff.

Actually I used #10 stainless steel wood screws, with stainless steel fender washers. I think I used two screws that were 1" long, and two screws that where 1.5" long. IMO, the right stuff for license palte screws is stainless steel, not "whatever an auto parts store has".

^ good point. if it's not stainless, corrosion/rust of the screws will reek havoc on your bumper, ruining the paint. However, auto parts stores "supposed" to have the right stuff FOR CARS (duh! LOL), so check there first for the stainless steel screws.

Actually most auto parts store don't have any, or much of any stainless steel. And no metric stainless steel. They might have plastic license plate bolts, whch, like stainless steel, won't rust. I acutualy used M6-1.0 stainless steel bolts to bolt the plate into the plate holder (after tapping the plastic plate holder with a tap). I hate license plate bolt rust!
