removing fuel filter help

aright folks... i was under the car doing oil last night and figured i'd re-visit the fuel filter. my car has like 150k on it with no real issues... but the fuel filter has never been changed... i was going to do it back when it was around 100k but couldn't get it off... needless to say... i still can't get it off... for one reason, there is that big black box thing that makes it really hard to get and wrenches or anything up at it. and for another thing, i don't want to snap my fuel line as the nut it pretty rusty looking. and how the hell does that clip thing on the other side work? if anyone has any good instruction other than the ones from j-body caseu they don't help at all. they mentioned to disconnect the bracket and it doesn;t even have a damn bracket.

You need 2 open end wrenches, a 20mm for the filter bolt and a 5/8" or 16mm for the line bolt. The space is limited but you'll manage. On the other side, there is a U style clip, use a flat head screwdriver to pry the clip out.


eta: Many cars have a bracket around the filter, but this one doesn't.

i have changed mine twice and didnt have any problems. the bolt side on mine looked rusty too so i sprayed some PB Blaster on it before i tried to take it off. got it off with 2 wrenches no problem and the clip side all i had to do was pinch the 2 tabs and it popped off.

Jack and jack stands, don't ever climb under your car with just a jack holding it up

yeah... one of my friends' jack failed and dropped the car on his arm... luckily he wasn't all the way under it. he say there with a broken arm with a car on top of it cause he couldn't reach the jack till his dad got home.

No let me explain is it something I can get to by removing the tire or is it alittle more involved then that?

you need to be able to slide under the car... it's in the center of the vehicle close to right between the rear tires... so jack up one side and put it on a cement block and jack up the other side and put that on a cement block or jackstands or ramps... you gotta be able to get under the car... but you don't need to be able to run under the car.

the first time i did mine i didnt even jack the car up. just slid right under it but then again im really small so i fit. lol the second time i had it jacked way up cuz i was dropping the tank and everything to put a new fuel pump in.
