Hello again
My car has been running great the last few weeks however I now notice that I'm only getting 400kms per tank(NOT MILES) anyway just want to know what you guys/girls are getting on you Alero ! are what would be the problem for this shitty fuel consumption !

First of all, quit with this "tank" shit. No one runs their car until the tank is completely empty. You rate your fuel economy in MILES PER GALLON or kilometers per liter for you weird Canadian guys. That's the only way you're going to get a real reading on fuel consumption.

You're getting about 17.4 MPG. I get 27-30 city on average.

k because when i fill up and i have the trip meter reading 215miles and i fill up my tank with 13gallons of gas and we only have a 14 gallon tank so thats what i mean when i say "tank." for me 215mi / 13gal =~17 MPG

Actually over here we use the measurement : Liters per 100 kms lolol

I calculated that I do around 8 Liters per 100 km. Which is not bad. A Hybrid civic is suppose to do around 4 L / 100 km.

The big question is how low does it get before you fill it?

I usually put in 10 gallons, at times as much as 12. Only once I put in 13.8

Im usually only getting around 400km for city driving.... for some reason its been harder on gas the last few months. Highway I'll get around 550km. To fill its usually around 44-47 liters.

its awesome that no-one is offering advice as to how he might improve that... just saying what their own mpg is... :glare:

and the next line down....

are what would be the problem for this shitty fuel consumption

check your air filters, maybe run some engine cleaner through your car, oil change?, check your tires PSI...

i forgot to add before. when i got 434km... (or ~270 as my gauge read) i got like 27mpg, and had been doing alot of highway driving around 65mph. For me, i consider that pretty good gas mileage, with the V6

I did run my tank until it was empty! Dry as a bone ! I am one of those weird Canadian guys as well :scpimp:
"filled the tank up until it would not hold one more drop then drained it dry" I was shocked !

you know by "topping off" when you fill up your gas tank you ruin the pressure in the tank and it can ruin your MPG right?

I average 330 miles per tank...(tank meaning fill it up drive it till I need to fill it up again)...love the 2.2

miles dont say much, i put on usually 3000-4000 a month. gas takes up the vast majority of my paycheck. if i calculate how much i spend on it per mpg i will get pissed and hate my alero for being a gas sucker. ignorance can be bliss xD

Hmm, I never knew about the too much gas in the tank can harm your mpg... its definitely good to know. Alero81, is your car stock? Which engine do you have?

I get 600kms per 45 litres.
Noticed a difference with new plugs got an extra 100kms per "tank"

i usually average anywhere from 485-550 km with usual fillups between 43-46 L of gas... not sure what that works out to be in MPG...

Maybe someone could post up a conversion for us canucks.... lol...

haha I didnt know they did a special edition Alero with a bigger V6? ;)

For myself, this tank I have actually 500 km and the light just came on. Thats mainly city driving.

The tire pressure trick really works. Fill your tires to the max psi it is written on the side of them. I was affraid at first, but I do get 80 to 120 more km per tank because of that.

That cant be good for the tire's what you save in gas cost you in tires is it really worth it ?

thats like 45psi for stockers... not like.. 70psi (what my g/f's dad had her tires inflated to) :glare:

^^huh? why would you put that much pressure in your tires? if you're over-inflating them that much they are going to balloon. Read the door sticker. I think most or all of our cars recommend 30 psi. 30-32psi should be fine.

btw. I keep accurate values for my fuel economy in an excel chart. I am getting an average of 449.4 km/per tank and an average economy of 23.44 mpg since April 2007. My highest was 610km (31.09 MPG) this summer with all highway driving.

Averages:
11.06 cents/km and 17.80 cents/mile. Gas prices have been an average $1.09 per Litre or $4.14 per US Gallon.

I paid $5.20/Gallon on my last fill.

I have the 2.4L 5 speed

From Oshawa, less than 2 hours from Kitchener.

From January 2007 to January this year gas prices held pretty steady around $1/L . 0.94/L was a cheap fill, and last Friday as I'm sure you know gas prices jumped 13 cents and I paid $1.377/L. Today they are $1.19 and I feel like I am getting a deal!

I didn't think our prices where that far off from Kitchener.. I have relatives in Waterloo.

yea i dont understand why people fill their tires to 40psi.....its dumb. over inflation will cause the tires to bulge out a little in the middle, which will make the center of the tires wear A LOT faster. 30-34 psi is what you should have in your tires. ESPECIALLY if you have rims and your tires have a low profile..... if you have 40psi in your tires and you hit a pot hole, NOT GOOD. I've always kept my tires at 30-32 psi and the tires dont wear too quickly..... I would much rather have my tires last longer instead of getting a few more mpgs by overinflating.....

Actually, the factory tire pressures are a compromise for good comfort, wear and handling. At stock tire pressures I'd probably wear the side walls pretty good. I run like 41 in the front a 36 in the rear.

In my Sunfire, I'm getting anywhere from 24-30... all depends on how much I get into the throttle :D That and I've done some tweaking w/ HPT, so....

But....

I don't know how you count, but I average around 20 000 kms a year with my car.

i was doing 400 km tank before average. 20 000 / 400 = 50 tanks of gas at 65$ a tank = 3250 $ of gas a year.

At 500 km per tank: 20 000 / 500 = 40 tanks of gas at 65$ a tank = 2600$. Which is a 650 dollars save for a year. If my tires last me one less year because of that, they would still last 2 years at least. I think I can get nice tires below 1300 $

Well I dont know. i have the 2.4 and ive been baby it. I do not go over 2500 rpm and i will only get 400/425 MAX. Change air filter, sea foamed it few months ago, changed to platinum spart plugs few months ago same time seafoam. regular oil changes. AFT once and awile to clean the carb. TIRE pressure all at 32psi. Is this all the car can get???
