Thinking about new rotors and pads for the front. Any suggestions? Want to spend as little as possible but still need quality, no fading or warping etc.

I've always had great results from the Duralast rotors and pads from AutoZone. I wouldn't get the lifetime carbon pads, go for the ceramic. I think the Duralast Gold are ceramic. I'm not sure if the front are supposed to be the organic pads, or if those are just on the rear.

Yeah, I've had regular duralast before (not the ceramic ones) and they faded big time. 3-4 hard stops in a row would leave me without brakes for 10 mins. What I've got on there now are the wearever organic ones from advance. I'm thinking about raybestos this time but I dunno, you say that ceramic is good?

I put ceramic on my Malibu, and they worked ok. I tried the lifetime pads from Autozone, and they were crap. I've run raybestos before as well, I think they may be better than the Duralast, but not quite as good as the ceramic.

Ceramics are really good...but make sure your calipers are aligned properly. my inner driver-side pad was depressed and never really helped stop the car (though it dragged, so when I'm moving, it was constantly wearing...and when I was stopped, I didn't need to keep my foot on the brake.), so it wore down to the metal. however, the other 3 up front looked almost brand new...after 30k miles.

The ones I'm looking at are raybestos ceramics

Gotcha, I was talking about the raybestos silver or whatever they are called, the semi metallic pads. Don't run those unless you want warpage and grinding. Go with the Morse ceramics. I think those are the best you can get without going all out.

A good set of brake is Wagner Edge. A bit on the pricy side, but the affect is noticeable. You could find them at a few auto parts store. I think you have to special order them from AZ and AAP.

Reviving a dead thread, instead of making my own.
Anyone else got opinions on ceramic Pads? I'm thinking of making the switch considering I need to replace my pads anyways.
Is there a brand I should look for? ones to avoid?
My rotors are being replaced with slotted ones too.

From what I heard, ceramic are really good, but sometimes really noisy. They squeak when you brake. Ìf its your daily driver I would consider something like semi-metallic pads I think they are made from kevlar. thats what I have, brake like a charm, they have been on the car nearly 50 000km and still have plenty of life left on them.
I bought them with my R1 rotors.

Its true. They stop good but are noisy.

I believe I have ceramic and they do get a little noisy toward the end of a stop. Not squeak just a normal braking noise a little more pronounced but not a problem.

just dont get the drilled and slotted rotors. they warp too easy and are meant for hard braking. having drilled and slotted on a DD is a bad idea especially if you dont beat on your brakes too much. i dont like braking hard, so im usually pretty easy on them and now my rotors are fucked. they vibrate when i dont brake hard....lol so in order to get good braking i just brake hard to warm them up and then they are a LITTLE better:lol:
stick with stock rotors or just slotted ones. brake pads.....your call

I have Ceramic pads on the Alero (Duralast Gold) and they seem to work pretty good..
Also, no issues with the drilled and slotted rotors after 32,000 miles so far.
My original pads caused that pulsation that would happen if you didn't brake hard. It's the pads that does that, not the rotors.

ah ok. well like i said, if i step on the brakes hard they work better. but i dont wanna make the pads wear fast..... if i dont need to brake hard then i would rather not

not sure if they sell for the alero, but i got all 4 of the magnum ultra rotors for the bravada for $179, a really good price and have had no rust and no problems with them at all!!!

And I was mentioning that I only had that problem with my STOCK parts. Not with the drilled and slotted rotors and ceramic pads.

Summit brand cross drilled and slotted with either Bendix Semi Metalic or Power Stop cermaic
Cost about $170 for everthing ;)
And they don't warp. I had NO pad left on my old pads, and the car never shook at all when stopping. That's why I didn't know I needed brakes

well, my R1 have also around 50 000km on them, and they took some hard braking before. they are Slotted and drilled. I have absolutly no warp in them.

i have heard a lot of bad things about r1 rotors with rusting and whatnot....

Any rotor will rust if you're not driving the car
kwhauck
04-10-2009, 01:03 PM
not if they are cadmium plated like the ones I got. The only place they would rust is where the cadmium was wore off by the brake pads, and the rust would grind off of there again once I hit the brakes.......
i'm talking about how the r1 rotors get rust all over them....

Well, for myself I cant say they rust. Mine are zinc plated. Of course the plating is out where the pads connect with the rotor and if the car doesn't roll for a while they are rusting on that part just like every brake rotors I've had , but near the hub or on top of it, no rust.
I should take a picture when I'll get my winter wheels off.

mine have rust on on em and not just wear the pads contact and they're zinc plated. the rears are rustier then the fronts

I took the Summit rotors to the powder coating shop and had the center hub done in plain old silver (Rally Wheel Silver was the color) just because the center rusts and it look like shit ;)

What did that cost you to get done? I have a new set of rotors waiting for a nice day to put onto my Alero, and that sounds like a good idea to get them powder coated.

So, I put ceramic on the rear, left the old pads on the front (They still have alot of life) and Slotted and Drilled Rotors on all fours. Now all I need to do is let the old pads on the front remove the surface rust and crap, and switch the pads when they run out! :p
