MY CAR STINKS! why, you ask? well. my uncle who I despise thought it would be a good idea to put dead fish in a garbage bag and put it in my trunk without telling me. So, i didn't drive for 3 days and the fish sat in my trunk without me knowing in the direct sun. Finally, I noticed that there were flies and a nasty odor coming from my trunk and discovered my fishy mess. I disposed of the fish (which luckily didn't leak out of the bag) , cleaned out the maggots, and sprayed a ton of lysol in my tunk. Last night, I also dumped a ton of baking soda all over the trunk and scrubbed it in and vaccumed it out this morning. The entire car reeks of rotting fish and I dunno what to do. Please help! this is 100% disgusting! :banghead:

maggots!??...110% disgusting ...firstly, whoop your uncle...try airing out your car, leaving everything open as much and as longs as you can then you might want to look into to getting it detailed where they shampoo ur inside

I would spray some ozium in there and take the empty can and bury in your uncle's ass or just hit him in the head with it.

Yeah thats what happens man...thats what happens

i'd fill my trunk w/ cedar chips. nothing over powers the smell of cedar.

basically... you need to out stink it. let your car air out for a while, but then take something that'll smell stronger, spray the hell outta the car, throw a bunch of stuff in there that'll smell good for a while (like said cedar) and then close it up and let the new smell soak in

...then abuse your uncle.

have the interior all cleaned up by a pro, and replace all the stuff in the trunk. Then send the bill to your uncle. If he doesn't pay, lawsuit.

well, he was visiting our cottage and i didn't really want him there and he knew it. I had gone fishing earlier with a buddy and had left the fish in the cooler at the house while i went out with some friends. When i got home, my uncle said that he had cleaned the fish for me (which I thought was suspiciously nice) and I didn't even think of what he could have possibly done with the carcasses. I called him up today all pissed off and he basicly told me that he was "sorry" and that he had forgotten to tell me that he had put them in there for me to get rid of. I told him to never screw with any of my stuff again and he hung up on me. I also told my parents (this isn't the first thing he's pulled on me) and my mom called him (he's her brother) and she said that it was ok because it was an "accident". I am so pissed and i want to vomit everytime I get in my car. Right now, i'm at my cottage, miles away from any store but as soon as I get home, i'm going right to walmart and picking up some Febreeze and a ton of air fresheners. I really don't know what to do because I've washed the spare tire cover 4 times with lots of deodorizing soap and it still smells like a rotten pile of fish.

Make that fool buy the car and get another.

I would go into walmart and buy about 3-4 bottles of Febreeze for the car and keep spraying the trunk out. I would also leave the lid open and park it under some shade.

Theres also that odor eating spray, cant remember the name. Its not Ozium but something more mainstream...

you can also try mixing 1/2 vinegar and 1/2 bleach into a couple of jars, and leave them in the car for an extended period of time.

our basement flooded last year, and smelled like mildew afterwards pretty bad. my mom set a dozen or so of those mixtures (in mason jars) around, and w/in a month the smell was gone completely. its amazing how well that works. apparently it absorbs odors right outta the air... worth a shot, and its cheap.

All good ideas so far. Besides leaving the trunk and windows open whenever possible, I'd sprinkle down a thick layer of arm & hammer carpet deodorizer, the kind that you let sit for awhile and vacuum up. It comes in a few different scents, but I can tell you that the 'Pet Fresh' version works best.

Man, I feel pretty bad for you. That would suck! My suggestion isnt to spray the hell out of your trunk. You might as well empty out the bottles into it.

Try lighting some insense and smelly good stuff in there. Im not really a pro at this, but I have never been in that kinda situation.

Hope all works out for ya.;)

thanks everyone... tomorrow is clean out the car's interior day. I have all of my supplies ready and hopefully i'll make a bg improvement. I'd say from yesterday to today we're down from 100% stink to about 70% stink so its slowly going away.

mythbusters did that "dead pig in a corvette for a week" myth. for the question of "is it impossible to get rid of the stink?"

and i think they gave the best answer.... "if there is a will, there is a way" the stink will go away... its just a matter of time.

the only thing is, not only do you have the smell, but bacteria in there as well... You can literally make yourself sick while in the car. He needs to either buy the car from you or pay to get it restored.

I wouldnt make him pay for the car.. I'd make him pay for a professional to detail his interior and get the smell out of it though-

I know I wouldn't give up my car just because it smelt like the grip of death lol

Its high time for some pay back.

My friend worked at the local grocery and some kid kept putting stuff in his car to make it smell. You know the drill, just to be a jerk.

So he fixed him REAL well.

He took some hamburger in the paper tray and put it under both of his seats... Dead of summer...

So anyhow... Next day kid didnt say anything... Day after that he seen the kid at his car and he seemed distraught getting out of it. Next day kid commented on it and wanted to know what he did, wouldnt tell the punk. That was a Thursday...

on Mondy the kid come in and wouldnt say much. evidently over the weekend the stench in the car was so bad he started to really look. Then he looked under the seat where the burger was rotten, maggots and flies all over. He had to pull the seats out of the car to clean it.

:haha:

Nononono, what you need to do, is getcha some nice cheapo cans of tuna. Get a screw driver and poke holes in the top on the can, pour the juice all over his carpet under his floor matts, then hid the cans under the back seat. Not to mentian some catfish stink bait liquid crap in the vents on the out side near the windshield.

To get the smell out - seriously - do this:

Place several paper or plastic bags or cardboard boxes filled with wadded up newspapers in the car overnight. Shut all of the doors and windows. The carbon used in the black newsprint acts like activated charcoal used in odor-removing filters.

An alternative method is to place a shallow bowl filled with white vinegar or baking soda or used or fresh coffee grounds in the car. Be sure to remove the bowl(s) and air out the car before driving.

Actually somebody did this to my work truck once.

The lady at Pathmark had an ongoing fued with the saleman that used sell Pepsi to the store. I took the route over and the truck reeked but I had no idea what it was.

2 weeks before he left the route, she put a fish under the seat (she worked in the seafood dept) and he just stopped using the truck. I took a can a Lysol and taped the nozzle down, threw it in the truck, and closed the door. The next day was better. I started to leave the windows down overnight and it eventually when away. Of course this was Januray

The truck was a POS anyway, the only plus was that it had air. This one was a 1987 Isuzu Pup Diesal

As for your uncle, it's easy. Do the fish thing, but put the fish on top on the transmission, the smell will bake into the car. Tuna works well too, unless he likes skanky women

ughh.

I have an uncle and aunt like this. They "borrowed" my late grandmother's GMC Jimmy and spilt milk in it and left it and never took care of the sun damage on the dash. I mean I am not a car cleaner all the time but i don't leave things to sit.

or what u can do is get a bunch of those scented oil things and dump them all into a powerade/gatorade bottle and just pour it all over your interior, spread around where necessary

The only thing i can think of is bleach but that would ruin the interior of the trunk so if you want to do that go right ahead. Other then that i would go with the detailing idea and get the thing shampooed out.

Old thread revival, this was a funny one (all due respect to op) . Personally, I rented a rug doctor yesterday and steam cleaned alero 2 times, and they sell a odor removal product for like 5 bucks. I can't tell you if it worked or not because I couldn't smell anything before anyways, but that is an option where you can kill 2 birds with one stone so to speak.

TheEdgeofSanity

OK, since this thread got revived, I may as well post an update. I actually cleaned the interior of my car tonight and I am happy to say that its 98% fish-smell free! you don't really notice it anymore unless it's a blastedly hot day and even then, it smells like a mix of vanilla air freshener with a hint of fish.

sooooooo, the verdict: baking soda in a bowl and lots of time to air out worked the best in cleaning this gawdawful smell out of my car.
