View Full Version : How well does an Alero coast?

First off, my main car is the proverbial beater (although a nice one), in particular, a 1995 Ford Escort that currntly has about 168,000 miles on it. Is it my imagination or does the Alero seem to coast quite a bit?
Maybe it's because the Alero is probably a lot heavier, or just because everything is newer (meaning newer wheel bearings, etc.) or something else? I swear when I'm on the highway and let off the gas, the Alero really doesn't seem to slow down all that much, even with the A/C on. On my Escort with the A/C on it's practically like applying the brakes, but without it on it still seesm to slow down much quicker.
Is this because my Alero is much newer, or something else?
If it matters, my Escort does shake sometimes due to a bad inboard DV joint as well (I suspect this anyway).
Your thoughts?

when I let off in my jeep it starts slowing down fairly instantly unless I am going down hill and I tend to speed up.

yeah, but your jeep should be about twice the weight of an alero....
its hard to tell around here, since our roads tend to be particularly wavy. :glare: hard to notice in a car, but get on a bike and you notice RIGHT away.
Its just some physics. Weight, Momentum, Engine Braking, Gearing. Its all variable.

also, the Alero is naturally more aerodynamic that the Escort and flat-fronted Jeeps. So it's not just one thing...its all those things...newer bearings, weight, momentum, aerodynamics, etc.

well.. factor in that the alero weighs in at around 4000 lbs with the LA1 V6 (3400)
It's got the tranny to do 140+ miles per hour.. so gears wont really slow it down much at highway speeds (60 - 75)
Mine coasts quite a while

^lol there is no alero in the world that ways 4000 pounds maybe if you and 4 of your friends were along for the ride. Jeep ways 5000 pounds so double the weight of a alero isnt to far off.

I read a post where Redog weighed his in at 4137 (or something close to that).. him saying that the car with a full tank of gas weighs that much^
so either that was a joke, a mistype, or you are wrong

GLS Sedan weighs 3,123 lbs. That is the heaviest out of all the option packages.

my car will accelerate all by itself on a flat road, but thats what happens when your idle is set at 900rpms. :p

she only weighs in at around 3100 + driver
if only they would have let us go up to 140 without the governor

Bingo ;)
Plus, ford escorts are hard enough to push anywhere, let alone coast them

It's been a long time since I actually looked at it, but I think the sticker in the door has the curb weight of the car....and whoever said Redog weighed his car at 4000 lbs...I think he was weighing his Delta, not the Alero

the delta definitely weighs in at close to 4000lbs (2tons). rwd cars/trucks are far much heavier with all the rwd components (driveshaft(s),rear, leaf springs, transmission)
