View Full Version : Problems with car wanting to stall

I had TOG headers installed right before I went to ASS 08. On my way home, when I stopped to fill up gas, it would start then stall, about 5 times before I could keep it going. Sometimes it would try to stall, drop to 500 rpm's then jump to 2000 and hold for 2-3 seconds before dropping back to 500 and stalling again. I just replaced both O2 sensors, air filter, and fuel filter but problem still seems to not go away. Biggest problem occurs when I fill up and try to leave. Also have had when within first 1-3 minutes of the car running the idle will bounce a little around 750-1000 range but when in gear and stopped, feels like it is trying to lurch forward. Does anyone have any other ideas to look for or try before I fail and give in to a shop?

Try cleaning the Air Idle valve first. Its locate on your throttle body. The black part with 2 small screw remove look to see if carbon buildup is evident on the spring and pintle. Clean and reinstall hopefully this fix your problem.

Vacuum leak will make rpm chase up and down. Check all the connections. Or you could have some craptastic gas. Burn it all, then put some injector cleaner in with a fresh tank of good gas and burn all that before you fill up again (so you don't dilute the cleaner).

Our cars are very reliable, in diagonstic. a vacuum leak will automatic trip a lean condition on the second start up. Cat failure will trip a P0420 and/or O2S related codes. However our cars do not detect IAC system.

oh really try removing the main vacuum off the throttle body (only on 2.4 engine)........

I have a plugged cat and have seen only 2 or 3 codes that may have been related to it.

my car use to do that ALL the time.. i posted a couple of videos on it too.. but the stupidest thing fixed it.. (is stupidest a word?)
I took my intake manifold off the car and painted it, put it all back together, and it has never stalled on me since- fires right up the first time every time, and rarely surges anymore.
now i'm not saying that spraying your engine with paint is going to fix your problem.. but it did something to mine

catalytic converter........
you will probably get 1 of 2 codes her shortly........lower catylist efficiency below threshhold or bank1 too lean.......
try changing the kitty cat......meow

Thanks all for ideas, will start trying some of these in the morning. Hope its not the cat cause I am waiting for OSV kit to have installed then redo the exhaust with high flow cat, 2 1/2 inch back with of course the middle tips. If I need to do cat then I guess I will do whole exhaust and then have rerouted once the kit is installed.

I took the throttle idle valve off and replaced it since I riped it apart while attempting to clean it and also cleaned throttle body real good. It was running great but would still want to keep stalling once I filled up at gas station but no other times. This weekend I took a road trip to try it out, ran good whole time till I almost make it home.
Now after driving 3 hours straight highway I entered the city to traffic. When stop and go in construction zone was ok then started to bounce rpm's at idle causing car to lurch forward each time. About a half mile later I slow down to make a left turn and car stalls going 15 mph. I restart fine and leave parking lot to have it happen again. Rest of the way home it would only keep running with one foot keeping rpm's at 1000 or more while breaking with other.
This is just weird and will welcome any more ideas cause this car is got me puzzled, keep thinking it is something gas tank related. No light or codes being thrown either when acting erratic or when it stalls while driving.

EGR valve, catalytic converter, fuel pressure regulator, MAF or IAT ... take your intake manifold off and put it back on.. lol
a few ideas - and like i said.. my car did the same thing just not as often.. when I took the intake manifold off and painted it and put it back on the car.. it has never done it since- watch it not start tomorrow and I need to replace somethin expensive

i have exact same thing after putting on my togs w/header wrap. my upper intake manifold gasket was ripped in 2 spots and how i found this out was when i put seafoam in the pcv valve and let it sit for a couple minutes, then i tried starting it and seafoam started spraying out of the upper manifold where the gasket was ripped.

Failing fuel pump?

had the same problem, get your EGR valve looked at. A buildup inside it commonly stalls out the engine.
