so my friends dad just came and looked at it and he thinks its either the rod or a valve, yah! anyways, i aint paying another 2 gs to fix it again, so me and him are gonna take it to his house and take it apart later this week and look at it, sad thing is i paid 2 gs in october to fix the same thing except then my engine had locked up to where it wouldnt start. right now it still starts

take it back to the person who originally worked on it, or just spend 1,300$ on an extended warrenty? and then pay 100$ and have the stealership do it right?
otherwise pay an arm and a weiner

Just get another motor and throw it in there. Cheaper. If it did this before and was fixed, it sounds like the real problem wasn't fixed (sorry, obvious). Partially plugged oil galleys, out of round journals, bad oil pump, etc.
car-part.com or ebay. under 1000 easily if you can do the labor yourself.

Yeah it's def a rod. you didn't help it too much by revving it, but the motor is shit now anyway.
No dealership is going to give you anything for that car, swap the motor. save yourself a ton of cash

Step 1: pull the valve covers and look for loose rocker arms and/or a broken valve spring.

Gotta love the quad 4, I have owned two and both of them had engine problems with under 100K on the clock.
The worst was a 97 cavalier that threw a rod through the block, which in turn started a fire under the hood. The other is in a 99 grand am that is sitting in my garage with metal flakes in the oil.

You spun a bearing dude. Sounds like it may also have bent the crank, or the bearing is really trashed, with that loud of a knock... Drain the oil, look for copper flakes. Remove the oil filter, cut it open, and if it contains the following, then it is a spun bearing:

well today we took the valve covers off and all the rocker arms and springs are all fine, after a little thought we cam to hte possible conclussion that it is more than likely that cam shaft or crank shaft either way that requries a complete tear down, so depending on if i feel like messing with it or not depends if im gonna just buy a new motor or try to fix

to find out no rods are knocking and 7 out of the 12 lifters are bad gotta love it
1 and my cam shaft has a couple wear spots

Not too bad then. I would still recommend opening the oil filter and looking for copper. If the cam was in that bad of shape, the cam bearings are likely pretty worn. It will be obvious when you pull the cam when you see the journals.
My cam journals (the two in the center) were in horrid shape, and there was considerable wear in the bearings. Some folks think there is a bit of flex in the stock cam. I would be curious to see some pictures of yours. Here is a quick shot of the carnage on my first tear down:

i dont think mine was quite that bad but i'll try and get a picture of it next time im over there working on my car
i'm replacing the transmission while i got the engine out since i had 130k miles on my car and found out the transmission was probably about to go out, i went ahead and got a new transmission with 65k miles for only $100 not to bad really.
if i keep this engine more than likely i'm going to go ahead and clean out the sludge build up inside the engine, replace the camshaft, get a whole new timing kit ( cam gear crank gear and chain), new oil pump ( just to be sure that wasn't the reason the lifters quit working), replacing the lifters obviously, new rods and new spark plugs
The reasoning is junkyards want to try and charge $750 for a engine with a lot of miles ranging from 120k-180k all at the same price when i will be better off to just replace all the parts in mine and have basically a newer engine,

turns out it wasn't just the lifters that were messed up within my engine, took apart the bottom end of motor today and found out that 1 of my rod bearing where bad which i;m thimnking maybe the oil pump was went wrong first

sounds like your taking this project on, in a quite positive nature. good luck with the rest of the tear down/build up.

so my engine is now rebuilt and car ruins again, i replaced the oil pump, the screen at the bottom of the oil pump, piston rings, cam bearings, oil sending unit, spark plugs, also replaced my transmission that had 130k miles with one that had 65k on it for $100 and maybe a couple other things i forgot
