I am considering tinting the windows on my 2 door. I have done some research regarding Ontario's tint laws. So far I have discovered that there are no restrictions on the legal % of tint for all rear windows. However, the driver and passenger side window state a 'vague' description. This means that it is the officers discretion to decide if your window tints are "too dark". From what I've read the main rule of thumb is that the officer should be able to differentiate your sex (male/female). Officers wish to have a clear view of the driver in the case that they happen to be drinking and driving or partaking in any other illegal activity. I have spoken to various officers who are not able to give me a reliable answer regarding this law. Today I spoke with an officer who informed me that various factors can contribute to to this "visible discretion", such as; the type of vehicle, size of window, time of day, and darkness of the vehicles interior. I inquired as to injustice of this law being that the standard of one cops discretion can differ from another. Essentially I assume that this means that any police officer having a bad day can hand out a questionable ticket if he decides your tint is too dark. He informed me that taking such a case to court would most likely result in a ruling in the police officers favor. I am not trying to make any trouble, and do not wish to be paying for any expensive tickets. I was hoping to do %20 tint all around.
I understand that the obvious answer is to stick with a lighter tint up front, but I just wanted to first get some feedback from other Ontario drivers.
My two inquiries are:
1) What is acceptable, or what % tint are other Ontario Alero owners using?
2) Opinions regarding the "vague" tint laws..

i went %35-%15, i like it, the cops dont care, so id go with that

I just had the Grand Prix tinted about 2 weeks ago. 20% all around. The back windows could be any tint. The lowest on the fronts is 20%.

so basically, if you can see out at night in the front windows, you're good.

35% is the legal limit for driver and passenger doors and you can tint your back windows as dark as you want to. i have 20% all around and i have had no problems.

As I'm in a province with the same laws, I've been told it's 72 % on the front.
I have no idea though, I want a written statement from the Police before I tint.

35% on front drivers/passanger windows, any % on the back.
If you are pulled over for anything lower then 35% on the front there is a $150.00 fine + you have 24 hours to strip the tint. The police in Welington County are not that bad about tint but at the same time I would not want a $150.00 fine. If you get the right tint 35% can look very dark.

thanks guys. I was sort of thinking that 35% tint would be fair for up front. So I think I will get 35/20

Ya I agree with you there. j/w though... if 72% is the max tint up front, it hardly seems justified to spend the money on it

I went to apple auto glass to have my tint done but they really messed things up bad so I wouldnt recomend them to anyone. However if you are wondering what the different levels of tint look like they will prob have a sample car with 35, 15, 5% tint on it for you to see what it looks like.
