Ok, so that last couple of days I've been having some difficulty getting my ho out of park..especially when I go to leave for work, It takes me a good while to pull it into gear

I do park on a slight incline, but whenever I park on anykind of incline, I use my parking brake first before i put it into park, but even on a flat surface it still does it. I tried putting my parking brake on, then put it into park, and tried to put it into gear...still gave me some trouble, but it didn't feel like the parking pawl was binding or if the vehicle's weight was preventing it from moving.

This is incredibly annoying and was wondering if any of you have had this problem, or know what it possibly could be?

Oh, and sometimes to get the damn thing out of park, I move the shifter to the side (its very slightly bent, and has been slightly bent since i've owned this car for the past year and a half) and don't remember hitting it making the bend worse...

Whew...I wish they made a standard v6...cause this sucks...

Oww man might be time for a tranny swap, how many miles?

just barely broke 98k, i don't think its the tranny itself, just the shifter, I hope its something as simple as greasing or cleaning the shifter (under the console)

Figures crap like this would happen, I mean I only have about 3 months or so before she's paid off

and it would be waaaaayyy too much work and money to swap in a 5spd

Hmmm shifter cable might be loose or frayed

try shifting all the way to 1 then to drive see of that works, does it clunk or anything when you shift?

Its just super tough to get it into gear...I'd go through every gear once i finally get it unstuck, but it still wants to stick when it goes back to park, but its not that bad, after I first get in it in the morning..no clunk other than when I finally free it but it doesn't like slam into gear or anything,

when its freed, tranny reacts normally as if there was nothing wrong..it just takes a lot to free it, esp. when i have to go to work.
I just don't want to think about getting rid of it (if it really is the tranny itself) I do have some plans for this car.

Mine does that and it is because the shifter isn't sitting all the way down the way it is suppose to....probably because I took the clip out of it when I was installing my remote start and lost it, but look at that. I have to push down on mine to get it into gear, but nothing is wrong with the shifter or tranny. Just a thought!

thats the one thing i haven't tried...is pushing it down...i'll see if that works (i've never tampered with the shifter), but it definetly feels like something broke under the console, and is impeding the path of the shifter..I'll probably take a look one of these days I have free.

i'm guessing that the shifter cable needs adjusting or the lock thingy is messed up. when its in neutral, can you push it into reverse without pushing in the button on the shifter? if so, the shift lock might be busted.

Definatly the Shift lever, It takes a long time to get it just right. and as soon as you do, it moves.

I'm pretty I broke the shift lock my 2002 alero..I had to force the shifter into drive to make a longe story short...Now I can shift through from park to drive and reverse without the car being turned on or pressing the brake pedal down......

Anyone here know how to fix the shiftlock so I can't shift into gear without the car being on and the brakes on?

PS I have 2002 2.2 ecotec automatic if it helps.....

you probably shouldn't have forced it like that.... I would take it into a shop and have them look at it...

I was going to say the tranny is getting stuck.

We had an 89 GMC S-15 that you couldn't shift into gear, you had to open the door and rock the truck with your foot and shift at the same time.

Ah the joys of company trucks

no doubt...to give the long story here it goes....

turned the car on in the driveway ...no biggy.. wife needed the housekey to lockup which is on the keyring as the car key...pulled the carkey out while the car was on and drove it...went to get gas and put the key back into the ignition...turned the car off....I couldn't get it to start with the key again...the key wouldn't turn in the ignition...so I had a friend tow in oark about 100 feet into a parking lot next to the gas station...for the next 3 days had friends look at tried a new key...etc etc etc... finally i got fedup and with the car in park and no key in the ignition with the ebrake just for safety I forced the shifter back and broke something to let the shifter move without the car being on and the brake on too...the worry i have of course is the obvious...i make a mistake hit the shifter by accident when i'm driving and the car goes into reverse....you get the idea...i'd be hooked with a tranny bill at the least.....

I want to fix it and I have the haynes on it but there's not a whole heck of a lot of detail about this issue ( shifter moving w/o car on and brakes on)

thankfully i can tap the newly cut key so it will turn on the on position but I have to use a remote starter to start the car...local gm shop said that fix will probably work for about a year so at least the car is drivable so I know I have to replace the ignition cylinder soon...not sure about the shiftlock though...I've done the checks in the haynes manual for it.......checked bsti and shift cable...checked the voltages at the btsi....and undernearth the hood...(can't remember the name of the wires for shifting I had to check).

please feel free to jump in..I'd appreciate any comments or help on it...

don think that you should try this on your own, it might be something in the transmission, but it sounds like the lock ring(button end) is broken off

not to sound stuipd...but what is the lock ring ( button end)?.....is it one of the ends for the btsi?..looks almost like a nipple that it hooks onto on both ends?

I'm a noob at this stuff

I'm not disagreeing I probably will end up taking it to a dealer for the problem with the shiftlock.....

Is there an easy way to read up on how the shiftlock operates so that I can understand how it functions in my car?

when you push the brake, the button end(shift lock) pin you snapped, it may be warbling around in there, it also may be the drive safety pin(lik, when you are driving, you dont knock it into reverse) they may both be broken....i will do reasearch ok?

HAYNES MANUAL!!

Haynes manual a bad thing?....it seems hard to locate any manual for this car where I am in kingston ontario...I'm thinking of buying the "shop manual" because the haynes is so vague in it's instructions.....
