I need help form my fellow Alero owners... My 01 2.4 has been giving me a lot of grief lately and I dont know what to do. Ive had to have my ignition system rebuilt... not sure what all that includes but i know they relaced coils and all the parts for that. Then the other day when i was driving to dallas i felt a sudden loss in power and then my car slowly came to a halt. The engine was still running but misfiring so horridly i was afraid to keep it running. This little incident was a lil to familiar bc a little less than a month ago i was on my way to chicago and teh same thing happend, but the shop where i had it towed to told me it was my coils and ever since then its been runing great. well until now. So teh GM dealership tells e its not teh coils, but i instead a valve thats sticking. This just doesnt seem right. they tell me labor alone will be about 1200 bucks. Im like no take it off the rack and i will come and get it.

Is there anyone that knows what the car would do if it really is a valve sticking?

if valve was sticking it would pop at idle

it would also cause piston/valve damage, our engines are interference engines, if a valve is sticking (not returning to closed position) the piston will collide with it

thats the exact thought that came to my mind when the guy let that figure slip from his mouth

Im not sure if it was doing that... i can best describe it as kind of a surging... if u heard it you would have thought it was going to die, but it instead would just keep running like that.

i never thought about that... i was pissed bc i had it in my mind it was those damn coils and that the guy who installed them would be paying to have it fixed...well, i was wrong. Not the coils lol

I had a similar problem with my 2.3 sunfire.... I tried replacing the coil packs, helped out alittle, in the end it was the rubber spark plug boots that went between the plugs and the coils.... that might be something to look into, and certainly cheaper than $1200.

Its sounds like a crank sensor issue..or cam sensor.. to me the car just save it's self from f-n things up...is the engine light on while idleing...???

the P code should pont u in the right drection... if no codes ck your inj.mod.

make sure there no water in it ect....

sorry i never got back with anyone to give the resolution. Was the coils. My mechanic(no longer my mechanic) used aftermarket products that didnt agree with my baby girl lol
shes running great now with the exception of needing a new catalytic converter, which i posted a new thread about.

Thanks to everyone who helped me with this!!
