It been awhile since i been on the board,. Probably last time you heard from me. Was right after the insurance totalled out my car. Anyhow, i got it. fixed, got some decent toys for her. Well its come time since the tranny is slipping. I been bouncing around the idea of sticking a 6-spd awd tranny into the ho and i think I might found something. http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg184/touge1981/0304081733a.jpg

I just need to figure out who can make the bell housing and where to fabricate the rear support to mount the differential.

What is that transmission out of? You'd pretty much need to fabricate an entire new rear subframe to mount the differential to. Plus you'd need to get rid of the stock fuel tank and cut out the middle portion of the floor to raise it up and make a driveshaft tunnel, plus countless other little things you have to worry about. This isn't a bolt in job, I just hope you're aware of that.

That's the easy part, the hard part is fab a housing, alignment issue since this will push the strut and wheel forward 2 inches, cut and weld all 4 axles. So the only way to fit this is to tilt the engine which mean all the factory mount needs to be custom. I looking to take some measurements to see is it worth it.
BTW the tranny is out of a 2001 TT Quatro Roadster

GM's factory race team did their ecotec/4t65 race cars with a tilt setup. It can be done, just go look at the GM tuner guide. Don't remember where it is, but it's on one of GM's websites.

All of it is the hard part. Let us know how it goes if you actually dig into it some more.
The TT uses a Haldex AWD. It's 100% FWD until the wheels slip, then the torque gets distributed to the rear wheels. It's not a full time AWD where all 4 wheels always get some amount of torque.

Well got a price quote of over $800 to have the bellhousing made, asked about adaptor plate to mate the orginial housing to engine but was told it possible but then I have to get a custom input shaft so that means tearing down the tranny.
Looks like this will have to hold and guess Im getting the 4t40 rebuild instead, because as much as bragging rights sounds for 6spd awd, the price is downright scary. This not including custom engine mounts, custom header, having to modify the intake for clearance, modifying the oil sump, and lots more work. So i figure I let someone with more custom building expereince try it out first. This tranny may be on ebay or the bazaar soon.

On second thought....you can't do a tilt setup if you're going to to actually go AWD with it, unless you're going to cap it off and not run the center driveshaft (FWD only). I'm thinking in terms of the rear output shaft from the front transmission. If you tilt it, the rear output shaft will not be pointing in the correct angle. whatever.

Actually the position of the transmission will remain the same just the engine is tilted. Similiar to the Corolla FX setup. The problem I'm facing is money and lots of it. For the price of getting the Alero into awd i could buy a lancer evo or Subbie STI. I definitely like the idea of having the only awd alero but Im not stupid enough to dump a shitload of cash into it..................................yet. Right now I'm still debating whether or I should do this.

Which is why I haven't done it yet. I was going to beef up a Pontiac Aztek AWD drivetrain since it is based off the 4t65 largely, and it has the same wheel base and track. Expense and weight, and rotational drag from additional components are the things that stopped me on that plan.
