you will be lucky to see 3-5 hp with a full cat back exhaust. A muffler will not do anything except give you better sound.

Have you ever tested it? Why do you think that 2" piping is adequate for a 3.4 liter engine?

You don't want to go too large, as velocity/heat is key for exhaust once you have flow. mandrel bent 2.25 or 2.5" would be good. High flow cat with mandrel bent exhaust and a better flowing muffler could be closer to 10 hp (id say 8).

As far as mufflers alone, I go for the sound over flow. Most if not all performance 2.5" mufflers can outflow a stock to near stock 3400.

mpracing.org has a muffler that is supposed to create a venturi/vacuum at the end, which helps with power. I don't recall which one but I was looking at it last year.

^thats what i meant. i've just read through a few threads over the years of guys who want to go 3" w/ no engine mods, and the engine guys throwing a hissy fit about it.

why do u think that with a modefied (which can mean all sorts of mods) engine it can give u larger performance and with a stock one it could harm ur performance? what r u basing your answer on? faster flowing with a modded engine?

forced induction forces more air in, need a larger exhaust pipe to allow that air to flow out. increase intake, increase output... duh.

If ur answer was pointed to me, then yeah i know that, especially if the case is with a supercharged or turbocharged engine. but all im saying is that with a stock engine and a bigger pipe (not too big) u should earn gains as well.

In order to really have some noticeable gains from exhaust, you need to add a header to your set up. The problem with diameter is that too big you lose backpressure, too small its restriction.

Losing backpressure is good. It is the loss of exhaust velocity that shows losses when using an exhaust that is too large.

I've got 2.5 piping all the way back with a glass pack and no resonator and a 3.5 inch tip. Not sure how horsepower is though I'm pretty sure its like 5 or so.
