And entire engine bay..

Who wants to make me one of these? It wouldn't be that hard, actually, I might do it. I just need a nice little sheet of carbon fiber and the knowledge of how to coat it with the glossiness and smooth out the edges.

don't know, some guy on j-body (Cavalier), that's the only shot i saved of it

I have the same pic saved, definitely one of my favorites. Some clear Lamin-X film over top of the carbon fiber sheet should do the job to make everything nice and glossy.

I wonder if that could be done to the 3400 SFI cover, if I can ever find one ;)

It almost just looks like a peice of c/f bolted to the top of a stock idi cover. Cant be that hard.

Yeah, they just drilled holes where the bolts go and put plastic washers to spread the force. I've never made anything with CF before, I know I can get a hold of a sheet of real CF off eBay, but I'm not sure how they keep the edges you cut from fraying.

there is a company a friend of mine runs here called fibergodz. they do custom fiberglass and carbon fiber work. if i can get around to it i might ask him about making something like this if enough people are interested. they do some really nice work. mostly speaker boxes with fiberglass and c.f. but they do just about anything really as long as the money is right.

I know we're in the 2.4L section, but it'd be nice if an IDI cover for the Eco could be made in carbon fiber. Only problem would be for a stock Eco, obviously the coils are integrated into that cover. But for me, I'll be using MSD coils, so I'd just need the top plate made in carbon fiber without the window for the ICM. I was going to just cover it with some adhesive carbon fiber then Lamin-x over it, but if the whole thing can be made, that would be better.

Some nice looking carbon fiber work the Fibergodz guys do BTW.

RKSport's is an entire engine cover. I'm just talking the black spark plug/IDI cover on top of the valve cover.

Ive never played with c/f before so bare with me, does it flex at all? Ordoes it just nor flex? What we need to figure out is how to get the OSV interior pieces remade in real c/f

[ion] C2
12-24-2007, 11:01 PM
it flexes, it's basically fabric

Spilner521

C2;324884']it flexes, it's basically fabric
It flexes and it's pliable in fabric form. Once you form it to whatever shape you want and apply the epoxy and hardeners and whatnot, it is as stiff as a piece of plastic or formed fiberglass and very strong.

c/f is expensive, good luck.

Couldn't you use one from a different engine (like the LSJ, LNF, or 2.4) with the individual coils.

I've looked at those. The pattern for the bolts holding it in place is different than the L61. I'm sure you could just drill new holes, but then you'd have to either cover or fill the old ones. Besides, I like that little recessed window for the "Ecotec 2.2" sticker....I made one that says "Ecotec 2.2 Turbo" to take it's place :thumb:

Nope. Actually I think it's a pic from Mantapart. Just found it looking for an overall pic of the engine on Yahoo. Don't worry, when mine is in the car, it'll be so clean it'll look brand new.

that looks pretty nice I have never been fan of the ribs it looks like 1985 all over again since the 2.3 Quad 4 used the exact same pattern on it.

who would've thought they'd keep the same style, it's as if they're almost the same motor.

I have no idea whatsoever what the previous post says o_O

Anyways, I obtained an 11x16 piece of carbon fiber

After painting the IDI cover black and mounting the CF to it, it appears one sprays several coats of clear gloss Krylon to shine er up. Can't wait to play with all this stuff.

Psshh.. I haven't repainted it yet though.. I screwed up and the CF didn't cover the first rib (going to paint that rib black) and repaint where the lettering is with more than one coat. It looks like shit right now, it's cracking lol:

Nice, I like it. How flexible was that sheet?

[ion] C2
02-10-2008, 08:39 AM
pretty flexible, (not at all the flexibility to bend around anything with a smaller radius than the cover though) it's thin and has an adhesive back, and the top is covered in some type of plastic

i need to repaint it though as you can see it looks terrible lol. i'm thinking of getting one of TheMeaningOfLife's covers and CF-ing it.
