OK you all know I broke my foot.
Well since then the Alero has been sitting idle. My wife took the car out to get gas on Nov 10, today I tried to drive it, but I couldn't drive it very well since my foot will not fit between the brake pedal and the center consol  and I had to push the pedal with the tip of my foot.
Needless to say I didn't get very far, but here's the problem.
I drove around the block, just coasting. I did push the gas and get upto 20 MPH, but then I pulled back in fornt of my house, stopped, put the car in reverse, and it started to coast backwards, about 2 inches, and stalled out. I couldn't get it restarted right away. I finally got it started (had to push the pedal down a few times) and when it started back up I could smell that gas, and the a/f gauge stayed at "rich" for about 1 mintue.
Since the car has been sitting for 16 days without being driven, or even started, is this normal?

i'm guessing here, but it may be because you haven't driven it and it didn't have a chance to get to warm up. maybe it had just gone out of "choke" mode and had a random fluke. if it does it again, maybe somethings wrong

sounds like a fuel pump or regulator prob.. like its losing the pressure it needs then builds back up when you crank it over. or could be mosture in the tank/lines from sitting just my 2 cents :coolio:
my uncles truck was doing the same thing a few weeks ago. I told him to check the fuel pump and he told me "it wouldn't start if the pump was bad" . then a i called him yesterday and he told me it was the fuel pump. grrrrr i told him to check that before every sensor on the engine. his truck wasn't sitting for days tho.
i will come down and beat the snot out of it for you if you want !!!! I m 10 min away when at work and i get a 45 min lunch that gives me 25 min to drive your car !!!!

Could just be the fact that it's new and you let it sit for that long without breaking the new one in... Probably just needs to be driven a little bit.. I let my car sit for a couple weeks once and it ran a little rough for a bit until I drove it around some.
Seems like stuff always happens when people shift into reverse.... I shifted to reverse one time and my water pump started leaking really bad..... I was like, "WTF????" lol

lol, if i shift into reverse when its below zero outside, my car just doesn't go anywhere. one time when i shifted to reverse, my power steering quit. hmmm...cursed alero reverse?

i bet it was h20 in the fuel. Gasoline starts to break down after a few days and get bad. If you filled it up fresh i bet it will be fine. If it is going to sit for a while again i would put some stabil in the tank.

^^ Yeah I think I should buy some of that stuff
Used it during the engine swap in the delta, That gas sat in the tank for 6 months

You don't need stabil after 16 days, gas doesn't go bad that fast. Dog said his wife filled it up on the Nov. 10th and the car has been sitting since then.
Chances are the fuel from the station was bad to begin with. Keep your fuel level in the tank filled up as much as possible to reduce condensation builup. I would try and add some Heet into the tank to remove moisture if the problem persists. When was the last time you checked the filter?

it just needs to be ran. you likely don't need sta-bil after that short amount of time, just dump a jug of iso-alcohol in the tank to get rid of any water.

He is right, i was backwards stabil is for longer periods, iso propyl will rid the system of water, but if there is fresh fuel in it she should be good to go.
Jayson how are you liking this snow? I hope to get a few miles on the sled tomorrow. Sorry for the OT guys, the comment about isoheet reminded me of my sled.

Gasoline does not go bad that quick. If your car would sit for more than 3 months, then yes get fuel stabilizer. My car sat for 3 weeks while I was in Europe. Came back, started fine, and ran. If it doesn't happen again, I will go with bad gas ;).

My Alero has been sitting since sometime just after ASS and I'd bet that it will start up just fine. It's probably just a fluke that it stalled. It also seems that any '96+ GM car is nearly impossible to restart right after it stalls or doesn't completely start sometimes.

i drive mine liek once every 2 weeks it starts up fine. but one time years ago my car did somethign similar once and only once and never again, i started it up drove to the mall, parked, started it up again drove 10 feet and it died, then it had a hard start and has been fine ever since....
